  • My grandma, the EW :(

This story made me sad because my grandmother was a total EW. She has gotten her hair cut for years and years and YEARS by the same stylist, M...I'm talking ever since I was tiny (I'm 26 now) and probably even before I was born, she's been getting her hair cut by M. They have obviously become very good friends over all the years, and M, now owning her own salon, gives my grandma a great rate for a hair cut -- $5 flat. She doesn't wash or style my grandma's hair, just a trim once every 5-6 weeks for $5.

M's husband has unfortunately gotten very sick recently. I think he has some kind of cancer, but I don't know the details. Anyway, as a result, M hasn't been working nearly as much. My grandma's vision has also recently taken a turn for the worse, to the point that she can't drive now, so it's become somewhat difficult for her to get to M's salon to get her hair cut.

A few days ago, my grandma called M's salon to see if she could get an appointment. Grandma knows all the other stylists who work there and recognizes their voices when they answer the phone, but the voice that answered the phone this time was unfamiliar to her. Grandma asked to speak to M, but the girl told her that M was not working today and asked if she could help. Grandma asked to talk to B, another stylist, instead. The girl said that B was with a customer and again asked if she could help. Grandma then demanded to know who she was speaking with. The girl identified herself as M's granddaughter and that she was helping out with the business. At that point grandma hung up on her and proceeded to tell my mom and I that if M was "going to be that way" and not take her business seriously that she (grandma) would be considering a new stylist. She went on to say that M had "some nerve to bring in that brat granddaughter of her's to answer the phones like that!"

Okay, let's recap this. M's husband is very ill so she's taking time off work to care for him. As a result, she's not working as much and is getting her family to help out her business. This apparently makes her a bad business owner, and grandma even complained about the other stylist, B, because she wouldn't taken grandma's call, despite the fact that she was with a customer. M's granddaughter is apparently also a brat, even though my grandma has never met the girl and knows absolutely nothing about her. "Well, she sounded like a little brat on the phone!" was her reasoning for that line.

My mom suggested that maybe grandma find a closer and easier to get to stylist that grandma could try, since it's hard for her to get out, but warned grandma that the prices would be higher. Grandma asked how much, and when Mom said it would probably run $15-20 at least at a place like Fantastic Sam's or Cost Cutters, grandma just about had a hear attack. "Are you kidding me!? I am NOT paying that much for a haircut! Who in their right mind would pay that much for a haircut!? That is LUDICROUS!"

It just makes me sigh and shake my head.
