  • A couple of sightings from this week

Decided to go to the beach on Monday due to being unemployed and really bored. I had a great time and my day was made by a sighting with a side of pwnage. As I was walking to the dressing rooms I see a group of teens standing around looking suspicious. One gets the bright idea of climbing over the barrier and walking along the dunes (big no no). He comes back to his friends and tells them that he doesn't see anyone or cops or anything and they all take off over the dunes. Cue lifeguard type person who is responsible for making sure people pay attention to the rules. He radios to other people and, in no hurry, walks over to the dunes. He finds the teens hiding behind a larger dune and brings them over to the official building. The teens get a stern talking to and some papers that more than likely had some fines written on them. I laughed and went in to change so that I could drive home in dry clothes.

Now on to last night's sighting. Hubby works for a retail gaming store and was training a new key holder last night. I went up to say hi and check out a couple of things. While I was browsing I noticed a woman talking quite loudly on her cell phone. Now this usually doesn't bother me much, nor does it really phase the people who work in the store much as they are busy with other customers. But this woman was in line to purchase a few things. She hangs up just as she gets to the register but doesn't acknowledge new guy. Her phone rings and she answers! She proceeds to have a rather loud and heated conversation with the person on the phone. I have to give kudos to new guy since he finished the transaction without so much as a small change in his smile. He even made sure to say to her in a nice loud voice "thank you for shopping at (store) and have a wonderful evening playing your new game". The woman didn't show that she heard or cared, but continued her phone conversation and slowly walked out the door.

Lately I've been wondering: How on earth did people like this get along before cell phones? How did anybody manage to get through their day without having a phone stuck to their ear 24/7? How did they survive without carrying on loud public conversations about extremely private matters? How did they get through their days without having screaming, profanity-laced arguments with their spouse/SO/somebody they banged last night/whatever while seated on a crowded bus? How??
When you start at zero, everything's progress.
