  • Dine-and-Dashing and the Assumer

This thread reminded me of this story but I didn't want to threadjack

When I was younger (16-17) a few friends and I drove up to LA to see a taping of That 70's Show (I'm dating myself a little bit ). On the way back it was around 10 PM and we stopped at some random Denny's off the highway to eat. There was only a few other people in the restaurant, and then us: a group of teenagers ordering big dinners.

So obviously we were going to Dine-N-Dash (tm).

Well not really actually, we hadn't even considered it, but the manager obviously thought we were! As soon as we got our food, he stationed himself right next to the door and pretty much stared at us pointedly. We weren't that far away from the door. At the time we thought it was pretty funny and we were trying to decide if we should dine and dash just to make him happy because he was obviously bored, having time to just sit around and wait for a bunch of kids to maybe possibly cause trouble. When we were finished and had the bill, I walked slowly up to the front area. The register was right by the door so I could have been going to pay...but since I was a dirty teenager I must have been trying to run for it. I could see the manager tensing and getting ready to do whatever it was he was going to do (grab me? yell at me?) so I lunged towards the door like I was going to run for it. The manager jumped up and knocked his chair over in the process. Instead of running, however, I calmly continued to the register and paid the woman behind it. The manager looked embarrassed (rightly so) and kind of stood there for a bit like he had a different reason to be there before slinking away.

This was one of the very few times in my life where we didn't leave any tip at all. Honestly it was fine service (except for the older man staring at us nubile teenagers the whole time), but that was pretty much just ageism. Definitely teenagers can be one of the most annoying and troublesome types of customers, but don't just assume that all teenagers are bad. The More You Know and all that

Did I miss the part of the story where the waiter/waitress was bad? Otherwise, it kind of sucks that the waitstaff got stiffed for having a jerk boss.

That reminds me of the Denny's by my high school. A group of friends used to go about once a week and either get a couple of apps for a snack or maybe get some shakes. It wasn't too expensive, probably about $15-20 for a group of six or so. We tipped well too, because heck, they were willing to put up with us for a couple of hours after school.

About a mile or so from the Denny's was another high school. It was an alternative high school for the kids in the district (explusions, pregnant teens, etc.), and they had the bad rap of doing a lot of dine and dashes, more the guys than the gals. It got to the point where we had to show the manager on duty our money before we could be seated. After a while, we stopped going and from what I understand the dine and dash went way up to the point where they wouldn't let the high school kids in at all.

A couple of years after I graduated from high school, I took one of my best friends out to lunch at the Denny's. As we were waiting, I could see the manager conferring with a waitress. Finally the manager comes over to tell us that we can't eat here because we should be in school.

We were both still young enough that we looked to be in high school. Heck, I managed to get away with a student fare on the bus until I was 19 when I got my first car.

After much back and forth I finally told the manager I was 21 and offered to show my drivers license to prove it. He would have none of it. So we left. It was no surprise that probably about a year after that, it was closed and there's a gas station in it's place now.

      DDD: Cuz it's cool

So, by using the Doctor's reasoning, bow ties, fezzes and bandanas are cool.
