  • O____O This might apply to me... (msn article on diet vs. mood)

Huh. Time to look at what I'm doing, in a different light. The article links one's diet to the mood-- stuff like depression and cravings and such.

Its legit. What you eat directly effects how you feel. Fast food is bad for you, makes your body feel bad, then you emotionally feel bad. I posted this in another thread, but cravings for chocolate, salt, etc are related to you being low on a vitamin or other type of healthy thing your body needs. The brain registers thirst as hunger, for example. I can't find an updated, recent list on what cravings really mean.

edit; oh it looks like i TL;DR'd the article without reading it. Good stuff.

There's a nutritionist/author named Elizabeth Somer who wrote a book about this topic. The original book is called "Food and Mood" and there is also a cookbook, and there is a more recent book called "Eat Your Way Happy" (I think).

Wouldn't surprise me if that was because we get a large part of our hydration from foods we eat.

You get hydration from what you eat, but not a large portion. Your brain realizes you need something. Your basic need is hunger. Your brain registers that you need food when you need water.

I was surprised about the "tiny shots of opiates because your body utterly hates X that you're putting in it." Not so much about the whole "bad food is bad" schitck. I love when I actually drink enough water, I've been remembering to do so more often now-- darn ADD. Even the good stuff/ stuff you love can be a victim of distraction. I don't think there is one habit that I've had my entire life. Except maybe sleep? No, there was that one month... and when I was under 6... okay... hurm...

                Stop buying the bad stuff.

                Seriously.

Thats what helped me. I just STOPPED buying bad stuff. If i don't have coke, milk, sugary juices, whats left? Well, my brita pitcher full of water! I drink an excessive amount of water because its all I allow myself to have. I don't feel bad about it, its not punishment, its just whats available.

I buy diet coke when I drink. Its never regular soda, full calorie. Ask yourself how much work youre going to have to do (or fat youre going to gain if you dont actively work out/exercise) by drinking regular as opposed to diet. Diet isnt a great amount better. But the lesser devil is better.

Right now my fridge has milk, apple juice, and water. (And Mike's Hard Raspberry Lemonade. And whatever my roommate has in there but we don't generally share food so I'm rarely tempted by her stuff.) I don't usually buy apple juice (if anything, I drink OJ, grapefruit, or sometimes grape which I mix with water or drink a little bit like a shot) but it's been sitting on my bookshelf since I was sick in February/March and I finally opened it last week cuz I was craving juice.

I don't drink soda too much, but I often keep a small bottle of Coke around because it helps when I get a bad headache. I don't buy big bottles, just the 16 or 20 oz (whatever they are) and I get them one or two at a time from the convenience store instead of six-packs. I don't drink the whole thing at once, either (helps that I like it flat so I tend to open the cap, then close it back up and leave it in the fridge for a while).

Sounds like caffeine addiction. Throw out the juice, its just sugar. Drink water, if you need to, try those crystal light packets.

Aspartame is a trigger for me-- headaches, weird visiony-things, migraines, difficulty waking up, the like-- so diet sodas, my favorites (but not off-brands, gross!) are a treat, like alcohol. I have a diet heavier on the dairy and eggs rather than muscle-meats, and don't get juices much, simply because I haven't had a juice jug since forever to put it in! ha! I'd honestly worry about protein and other stuff that goes along with animal products if I stopped eating those, and I'm not sure if those are the problem. It's probably some of the bread-type products I get: crackers, some cereals like shredded wheat, cinnamon swirly things, store-bread, you get the idea. Oh, and caffeine, definitely-- and straight table sugar in the (egregious) amounts of tea I can get to drinking. *sigh* I need to start picking through that side, but it might also be that allergy thing due to the area I've lived in most of my life.
(Explanation: the way I hear it, is that everyone is allergic to at least one type of sagebrush. There are only two places in the entire world where all 81 types of sagebrush grow: Outer Mongolia and the Great Basin-- Utah/Idaho mostly. ... I live in the Great Basin. When I went to San Fransisco for a week (love the town, btw!), the gross bags under my eyes disappeared, and I actually enjoyed waking up. ... Eh. Circumstantial at best, because I haven't noticed something like that since, and I've been on a few road trips since then, but not for too long... and I could have simply not had something in my diet during the trip... unlikely, but possible... and that concludes Teh's TMI Info-session!)

Most of my caffeine comes from tea, which I mostly drink one cup in the morning at work. Headaches are either migraines (which I thankfully don't get as often as I used to) or sinus/slept too late headaches on the weekends.

eggs/dairy have a crapton of protein. if you ever want help on a diet regiment for the rest of you life ( a healthy normal one) I'd be glad to help The only way to figure out what the problem is, is to eliminate the source of the potential problem.

a regular diet is something I seriously do not have. Part, if not all, of it, I'm sure, is the ADD-- which I really see as a part of me, my personality, rather than a discreet problem or illness or disorder. I'm game for the diet planning, Lord knows I need some consistency. Also, I finally went back through my email notifications... eh I'll pm you.
EDIT: now that I think about it, my eyes, like under on my face, feel tired like I want to sleep-- after I went to Jack in the Crack for OJ (tons of sugar, but it's only/just oranges and water, nothing else, I checked), chorizo breakfast burrito, and hashies. (I lurve hashbrowns, but can't cook them, and the hash-nuggets I like have trans-fats in them. Need to look more at them, need to eat more potatoes-- I have potassium issues.)

Chorizo is extremely high in fat. Those eggs (well, liquid eggs god knows whats in them) are cooked in "butter" and whatever grease is on the grill. The hashbrowns are deep fried. Go get potatoes from the store and make hashbrowns at home. Sugar from fruit is still sugar, if youre getting too much the source is kind of moot.

I take potassium for after I workout. Walmart had like 600caps for five bucks

720 calories in that burrito alone. holy crap. the hashbrowns have to be another 300. that orange juice is 180 at the lowest.

fourty one grams of fat. holy everloving im glad i never eat those.
