  • My sister's EW

I don't know exact details, but this is according to her facebook status updates.

She's renting to a couple. The woman is 9 months pregnant. The couple owes rent. According to the woman, she talked to the county sheriff and can sue my sister for anything wrong that happens to the baby due to stress that my sister's causing them.

I guess this means that my sister can also sue for the stress the couple is putting on her. My sister is also pregnant and is expecting to deliver anytime soon.

Well, I can sue the same person for the same reason.

Doesn't mean I have a reasonable chance of winning. Or even any chance of winning.

Also, people dont realize how ridiculously expensive it is to sue someone. A lawyer isnt going to go "Oh your ridiculous claim? no problem! Pro bono! if you win, ill take a cut, if you lose hey whatever I dont work for money!"

Hmm, I'm 37 weeks pregnant and manage to pay my rent. Never considered suing the apartment complex for stress.

Also, shouldn't have read this thread. Laughing so hard, my belly hurts.

Also expensive to evict someone, which is probably what the landlord will end up doing due to nonpayment of rent. Lose lose situation I guess. Expect for the folks who get away without paying rent, that is.

Be sure to have your sister call a lawyer to confirm if it's true. We all know a lot of people play the 'I'll sue' card to get their way.
How was I supposed to know someone was slipping you Birth Control in the food I've been making for you lately?

First of all, I don't believe a sheriff's deputy told them any such thing. Cops don't like to get in the middle of civil matters. At best he told her the rent situation was a matter for the courts, by which he probably meant, "your landlord has to take you to court to evict your sorry ass."

Although the idea of dueling babies does sound like perverted fun
They say that God only gives us what we can handle. Apparently, God thinks I'm a bad ass.

There's always Civil Court, sometimes called Small Claims Court. They can sue up to a certain amount of money without a lawyer. Since there should be a lease spelling out how much rent is due, there is the amount that can be sued for. So they could sue for the back rent, but not do a full eviction.

Doing a quick search, here is New Jeresys FAQ on the court. They do mention back rent as something that can be sued for.
