  • At the dentist office

Hello there. It's been a couple of months since I posted being I kind of ran out of stories. However, I have a new one from when I was on my vacation a while back.

I went to get my six month cleaning at the dentist office. The hygenist, who is from Nashville, TN, told me I was really one of her favorite patients that comes in, and that I am easy to talk to. I told her I was happy to hear that and asked why that was; why wouldn't she feel this way about other patients?

She told me that the majority of the patients my dentists sees flock up from Boca Raton, many being neighbors of his, or even people who are also in medicine and have much in common. Whenever she is about to work on many of these people's mouths and they hear her Tennessee accent, many will ask her "Are you sure you know what you're doing?" For some reason, these snobbish people from Boca Raton, FL feel that people from southern states like Tennessee are too stupid to clean teeth, let alone do other things.

I wish I could tell them "Nope, she just purchased that dental degree from www.fakedentaldegrees.com and just wants to fool you rude, God-awful people.

What's also bad is one of these people gets sedation treatment before her teeth are cleaned. Normal insurance does not cover this, but she gets it and most likely does not get charged for it. Her profession? She's a psychiatrist! This mean, nasty person is a person specialized in listening to people's problems, but is mean to my hygenist whenever she visits.

What do I think of my hygenist? Very friendly, nice, and knows her stuff about teeth. Boca people can go to Hell.

...add to this the fact that Boca Raton sounds more or less like Rat's Mouth (a bit of free translation here, but not even too much - more like Rat Mouth) and the picture completes itself

Mouse Mouth. Rat's Ass is on the west side of the Florida peninsula, but the Chamber of Commerce claims that isn't really their name.

I'm scared to death of the dental hygienist (not the dentist); I have very sensitive gums and have had horror story experiences with them.

I choose my dentist as much by the hygienist as the dentist himself. If she's no good, doesn't matter how good the dentist is, I won't be back.

When I find a good hygienist, especially one who is friendly, I don't give a rats behind what their accent sounds like.

If I ever move to TN, I'll be back looking for a reference . . .

This is one of the reasons I'm uncomfortable with moving out of the South, and another reason I especially don't like Florida (The other reason is the UT-UF rivalry).

That is, in fact, literally what the name means. The story I heard was that there were two sharp pointy tooth-like rocks on either side of the entrance to the harbor, and the Spanish sailors had the idea it looked like they were sailing into a rat's mouth.
