    Story Here.

And that title is simply my opinion of course. If the kids are playing basketball at any point, don't call the cops. Don't be a loon and expect that teenagers are going to be QUIET outside. Especially on non school nights. Accept the fact you were probably the same way as a child, and be gald that they aren't throwing drunken parties or vandalizing properties like alot of teenagers seem to want to do in rebellion. Deal with the basketball games, don't call the cops on someone for SITTING in their own backyard at 10 pm. They paid to use their property same as you and you can't tell someone what to do in their own backyard. And really, stop holding onto the kids basketballs. it's not evidence, it's damn rude. Unless they broke your window with it (In which case ya should be taking pictures not the ball), put it back over their fence.

Dribbling basketballs at 10 at night???? Personally that kind of noise would interfere with my ability to get a good night's sleep.

I'm guessing the parents dont have jobs to go to during the day like normal people????

10 pm is a bit late for playing basketball, I agree. But people should be allowed to make a reasonable amount of noise during the daytime.

I have to wonder how often this happens.... if it is most every day for hours on end then, yep, it would be annoying. But on and off at reasonable hours........

For me it depends. If it's a week day then no, the ball-playing should stop at 10 PM. It's noisy and neighbors have the right to get a good night's sleep before work.

On the weekends I'm more forgiving of noise.... but don't forget not all jobs are Monday-Friday only.

but ... o wow. the more i read the more it sounds like the basketball family is being harassed over everything.

wow. i've had some shitty neighbors but... i've never been that anal towards them. hell my current neighbors had a party one night and it was loud - watching a game i think. what did i do? i said to myself "hey it's the weekend - and they're a lot quieter than the people who use to live there"

I get that late night basketball should stop. But if the kids are outside just sitting on the porch or something, and you're calling the cops cause they're talking or sitting in the hot tub.. that's just stupid.

See, my neighbors, the ones caddy corner from me, are the loudest group ever. BUT, they know that on the weekends, I'm here sleeping after work, and they try to be nice and not let their kids play in the alley (For more than just waking me up). Understanding neighbors = Win
Neighbors like the family harrassing the other.. just plain rude.

So they were outside at 10pm and the first thing they do is call the cops?

our noise bylaws are 11pm weeknights and 1am weekends, (kinda frustrating as i work early on weekends) but I would gladly trade 10 pm basketball for the little B***h next door that likes to come home screaming drunk and fighting with her Mother at 3am.

I was willing to TRY to be impartial, but then I stumbled over the phrase "...loud dribbling that diminishes their quality of life."

I mean, come ON. That's the kind of line that, if Harry Anderson had read it from the bench on an episode of Night Court, would have elicited howls from the studio audience. He then would have told the complainers to get a life, banged the gavel, Dan would make a snide comment, and they'd cut to commercial.

The fact that they consulted with an attorney over what to do about the fact that their neighbors HAVE CHILDREN who PLAY OUTSIDE...well, there goes the last shreds of my sympathy. I work nights, so I should be more sympathetic than usual to their imaginary plight, but...I just can't do it.

I love the part where the sound meter registers the "noise" from the basketball as the same as a car that passes by.

Should we start issuing noise violations to cars that drive after 10pm? I'm sure the sound of driving "diminishes their quality of life" as well.

Seriously... it sounds like these people (the ones complaining) need to move to a housing community that doesn't allow children.

That family reminds me of the cranky old bastard who once lived behind my parents. This guy, had a *serious* problem with children in the neighborhood. He would actually yell at us for playing in *our* yard, because we were being "too loud." I could have understood somewhat, if it was the middle of the night. But, in the afternoon? At least when birthday parties were held...he didn't pull that crap. Even with the soccer games in the backyard, the music, etc. we never heard a peep out of him. Apparently, the guy was afraid of what my mother would do to him But, the final insult (or the final "fuck you," if you prefer) came after he died--we threw a noisy party

Our upstairs neighbors must play basketball in the apartment. Along with train circus elephants, bowl, throw furniture (a couple times it sounds like a bookshelf was tipped over), ride bikes, and whatever else they do up there that makes the pictures on the walls as well as items on the floor rattle at times (the tenant below us can hear them). Ramps up at night most of the time (although things may calm down now that school has started). I understand they have two small kids, but has nobody up there heard of the concept of going outside to play?

We have complained, but according to the management, that's "quiet enjoyment" and they can't do anything unless there's really loud music being played...which does happen, but they're smart and tone it down before I can either call the office or get a tape recorder set up. Eh, what can we do? Certainly not going to get the police involved. Annoying, yes, but we can live with it.

This reminds me of the time my grandparents decided to install a pool in their backyard for the grandkids, and their next door neighbor took them to court over it; apparently he was a professional writer, and his argument was that if the pool was installed the joyous shouts of the children would interfere with his writing process, which in turn would rob him of his livelihood.

Seeing as how I spent many happy years enjoying a good swim in my grandparents' pool, you can guess how well that argument went over with the judge.
