  • Epic Fail Over Minor Violation

Okay kids, it's time to play "How many fails can one guy make?"!

    1. Park in a handicapped space without the proper placard. Fail.

    2. The spot has a "reserved for" sign on it. Fail

    3. You're a young black man in gangsta-chic insisting that the name on the reserved sign is yours. The name is Takagawa. Fail

    4. MRS. Takagawa. Fail.

    5. Insist that Mrs Takagawa is your mother while the real Mrs. T is standing on the other side of the parking patrol car. Fail.

    6. Realizing you're caught in your own lies, attempt to shrug off the whole incident by claiming you were only going to park there for a few minutes anyway. FAIL.

I had to leave at that point. . . But I don't think it ended well for Mr. Fail.

Major fail: Why does a reserved parking spot need a handicapped sign on it?

I ask this because one day, shortly after my wife had foot surgery and had gotten a handicap parking placard, we parked in a clearly marked handicap spot. When we were leaving, some jerk had blocked us in and was yelling about us taking his reserved spot. As far as I was concerned, the sign said it was reserved for handicap parking, and we qualified for that. We had to get the apartment manager to get the jerk to move his car. This would have never happened if the jerk had not insisted on having a handicap sign on his reserved spot.

It's a reasonable question. Mrs. T is apparently some muckety-muck visiting the school and she had a disabled person with her (and the handicapped plak for that person) so the school put a sign in the space to reserve it for that one day. It was very clearly marked as reserved: I saw it that morning when I parked in the spot two spaces over. Mr Fail had to have moved the sign to be able to get his car in the spot.

I have also seen "reserved for" handicapped parking at a few businesses. Don't know why they do it unless there's a problem with having so many handicapped customers that you need to reserve one for someone special. It also makes sense when the regular reserved spaces are too far from the building to be proper handicapped spaces. Just my best guess.

I think the jerk you encountered was just so accustomed to parking in that spot he started seeing it as "his" spot. I get a little like that over the places I park at the Uni. . . Mrs T was actually in "my" spot, which was why I was so interested in what was going on with Mr Fail.

In my old apartment complex, there were a few handicapped people in the same area. One much more limited in mobility than the other, so the complex made sure to have a "Reserved for" sign for him, so someone with better mobility didn't park in his spot. There are enough handicapped spots to go around and then some, but they didn't want him to worry.

The other reason that I've seen is where someone lives there or works there and has had their parking spot taken by someone visiting.

As long as it's not the ONLY handicapped spot, there's no reason why there can't be a "Reserved for" spot to make sure that the person who lives or works there has the ability to park... especially if they're someone who can't walk far distances.

back when I did parking enforcement, I idiots like this were my pet peeve. the handicapped parking signs here actually state "No Stopping" w/t a plaqard and meant an automatic $100 fine. the old "but I'm just here for a minute." line just got me to say "if you don't move before i finish writing this ticket, too bad"
It's a tough row to hoe, and I'm just the Joe to hoe it.

From what I recall, the spot was his personal reserved spot. The jerk factor came in because he insisted on having the handicap sign on it, which caused the confusion.

actually IA, that may make sense if he is legitimately handicapped. I know a lot of towing companies are a lot more comfortable towing someone that is in a handicapped spot without a placard than just someone in a space that isn't assigned to them. If he truly needs the space having that extra insurance that he won't have to worry about someone not wanting to tow.
