  • Sending off the resume...

Just got confirmation from all my references that I can include them.

    Have a (well-written, very well-edited) resume.

Have a cover letter that is appropriate, expresses my desire to increase my knowledge and ability in the wine business, and is a good representation of how serious I am in applying for these jobs.

Time to send it all off to the three listings I've found.

    Wish me luck.

pssh, blow the nerves away, you'll be fine, you've put a lot more effort in than most people who've also put applications in, and the fact that you can coherently put scentences together will probably put you ahead of most applicants.

but anyway, if it will reassure you, best of luck!

CW: So what exactly do you do in retentions?
    Me: ummm, I ....retent stuff?

you still may want to tweak your cover letters for each place, because even if it the same thing, each company going ot be slightly different and might be more impressive to cater to there needs.

ex) if one is small family owned, mention stuff about that compared to another that might be huge corporation..... which you also love their size just for different reasons

The one good thing about the cover letter I have is that it talks almost entirely about customer interaction and the business of wine. So it's sort of a one-size-fits-all letter. Yay for the NY wine industry being a bit...cloned...

And thank you, Darkforge, for reminding me of what I'm up against. I forgot that little tidbit about being able to write a coherent sentence.

                *blinks*

The store owner wants to meet tomorrow.

I have to open the store tomorrow.

His option is to meet me before 10am, or wait till the weekend.

Well, I had the interview this morning.

I like the owner. A lot. I like the store. A lot. It's a new store (opens Saturday) with a lot of potential and a good business plan. The owner has a background in booze, so that helps a lot, and he's willing to work with me on all my (admittedly few) requirements.

There's only one sticking point (he opens Saturday, I'm not available until late October/early November due to commitments at the current place) so I'm trying to figure out a way around that. I'm thinking maybe I offer to work weekends for a couple weeks to transition in. It's not like I'm working with sensitive stuff that would require me to only work at one store at a time, after all.

sounds like congrats are in order. Hopefully the two jobs can place nice, as it seems they rarely want to these days when many of us are expected to have ONE job and tough if they don't want to give you enough money or hours to live they feel the company is the only thing that matters

                        I heard back this morning.

He's not offering it to me because he wants someone to start immediately.

I offered a compromise, so now I'm waiting to hear back.

Keep your fingers crossed for me. I really want this job. I love the store, the philosophy, and I think the owner and I could work well together. The idea that I'm not getting it because I'm currently employed seems a bit...odd.

That's not unheard of. Some places really want immediate availability, so won't work with someone who has to put in notice.

Then it should say so in the ad. I probably would have worked something out ahead of time if he wanted immediate availability.

His ad is still up on Craigslist. He hasn't posted a new one, though. I just don't know what to think of this. If he really wants me on staff, maybe he'll accept my compromise.
