  • Scheduling An Outage

Hiya folks. After the outage last night, I found out that some other activities going on might have been at play. I need to know, for sure, the ultimate cause. So, we're going to do an experiment Sunday night into Monday morning. The site may go down (likely will, but there's a chance it won't). If it does, we'll be down for less than 5 minutes.

Scheduled time: Monday, Oct 4, 6:30am, GMT. Times around the world:
    • 11:30pm, Oct 3, Edmonton, Canada
    • 1:30am. Oct 4, New York City, USA
    • 6:30am, Oct 4, London, England
    • 8:30am, Oct 4, Cape Town, South Africa
    • 4:30pm, Oct 4, Sydney, Australia

I'm sorry folks, I was wiped out last night (9 hours sleep between the time I got up on Friday and Sunday night). I didn't get this done then. Adjust the times forward by 24 hours, and the test will be run then.

So if I'm in Mass the site will still be working.

I have no idea what you mean by that, NateTheChops. Not a clue.

Just a reminder: The (hoped for) outage will occur in about 15 minutes.

Okay all, I'm finally done. Took some doing, but I finally am able to crash the server reliably. Despite what you might think, this was not an easy thing to do. However, it was a very good thing, since now that I know what it takes, I can work on finding a solution to prevent the problem in future.

            Yay!!!

(How come every time I see the title I read "outrage" instead of "outage"?)

              Excellent!

Now, a proposal for the management:

From now on, can the management please ensure that they schedule all unscheduled outages? Just so we can be, like, prepared for it.

<sarcasm>And don't say it can't be done. We're your customers, what we want has to be done!</sarcasm>

Yes, yes, indeed. Be sure to advise us at least a week in advance of any power outages that would affect the server; make it a month if it will be caused by the weather

We've had a couple more rocky times, sometimes noticed by the browsing member, of late. If things get awkward when browsing, we're working on it.
