  • Dining hall compliment

For reasons I don't fully understand, the people who work at my campus dining hall like talking to me. I like being friendly and it's really cool, it just...puzzles me slightly that they don't tend to talk to many other people. [This isn't at all any kind of condemnation or slight of the dining hall workers, it's just that I get so BAFFLED sometimes when people talk to me when they don't need to. Eisa needs slightly better self-esteem/confidence.]

Anyway. I had a moment today that, if I'd chosen to, could have made me pitch an evil bitch fit. Or I could do what I did and take it as the compliment I believe it was meant to be.

The way our dining hall is set up, there's a main menu section and there's a "menu-tainment" cart right next to it, where people make different items, usually some kind of salad or wrap. Sometimes it's dessert, like bananas foster. Mmm. I was walking past the menu-tainment section to the main line [as they had lasagna!] and the girl working there said "hello" and asked how I was. And then she said that she really liked my outfit today. That it was really cute.

And then added that it made me look slim because it was dark colors, dark colors are more slimming, and so wearing all that made me look slimmer.

So I just said "Thank you" and got my lasagna. Not like she was trying to call me fat or anything, you know?

That was just a little something to brighten up my day.

That's probably WHY they talk to you. People respond to smiles and politeness and being treated like a human being.

REAL easy way to become a Favorite and get awesome service.

The best part about taking anything even remotely complimentary as a compliment is that if someone meant it as something different, acting like they said something nice to you can affect how they treat you in the future.

I've run into cases where people would try to insult me and I'd take it the other way (they were trying to be sarcastic and subtle), and they'd end up being genuinely nice to me in the future.

i agree; you have an approachable vibe, and that's a good thing. don't let others spoil it, even if the compliment is a bit backhanded.
