  • New Chat System

    Hi there everybody!

We have a new chat system we're bringing online. Right now, it's still very raw, so it might be a bit intimidating.

For the next few days, if you go to use it, you'll have to create a new login over on that system. Any of the web apps we've set up will step you through it. Once I get the code for this functioning and stable, we'll be hooking in your existing CS login. You'll use the same user name and password to login as you do to read the forums.

After that, we'll bring in your friends and the social groups.

Right now, though, we're looking for where we might be doing anything wrong. Please, login to the system, check out the group chat. All of the new chat systems will automatically join the group chat.

If you're feeling adventurous, you can use Trillian, Pidgin, Psi, and Adium to connect (depending on your computer's operating system).

Once we get everything ironed out, I'll be posting full docs, with screenshots, for how to use every single option we can find for you to get connected. For point of reference, as of right now, it looks like about 10 different programs will be documented. If you can't get one of them to work, you've got other options

So, come over, check it out, and either reply to this thread or PM me with any issues. The overall goal is to switch to this chat server by the end of the month, and close down the IRC channel at that time.

OMG! A chat system that doesn't make my browser choke on itself!

Thank you Pedersen. Can't wait to try it out.

On behalf of the mod team, I want to thank Pedersen for accepting the daunting task of setting up this new CustomersSuck! chat.

For about a year and a half or so, the mods have been discussing what to do about chat.
It had become dormant for quite a while, and that was disappointing, because the CS chat used to be very active, and was always a great way to get to know our fellow members.

While we are grateful for RestaurantDude for taking it upon himself to revive the IRC chat under the CustomersSuck banner, it was very clear from the discussions among the mods, and with Pedersen, that there were certain features we wanted for our CS chat that were not available with the IRC chat alone.

As always, Pedersen has put in a lot of thought and dedication into creating this chat, trying to accommodate the "wish list" of features suggested by the admin of CS, while attempting to maintain the same feel and fun of the former CS chat.

We hope the members will check out this work in progress and offer feedback so that Pedersen can put the finishing touches on it and CS can once again have its own official chatroom.
Too tired of living and too tired to end it. What a conundrum.

I just wanted to post an update for everybody since I was out today entirely.

A family emergency has called me to Tennessee. It looks like I'll be back on Wednesday.

As a technology preview, the new system is working very well. The only issues that seem to still be left (that I have been informed about) are related to popup blockers, and one thing in Chrome.

Firefox and Chrome both block popups by default, and jwchat makes heavy use of popups. You'll need to tell Firefox and Chrome to allow popups through. Possibly Opera, too, though I've not tried/confirmed this.

Chrome, in particular, has an issue with the font in chat, resulting in the last line being cut in half. Basically, you see the top half of the letters. This is exceedingly annoying, but I don't have a fix yet. Hopefully soon. For now, I would recommend either the Jeti client, or SparkWeb, or a standalone client if you're comfortable experimenting as I mentioned in the first post in the thread.

The current timeline for rollout is that the new chat setup will begin using CS logins over the weekend of Nov 20. That will be the reset I warned about on http//www.customerssuck.com/cschat/ but that will be the only one required, ever. After that, new features, docs, and screenshots will begin happening en masse, and we can hopefully see more and more people using it then.

You might be able to see me online on occasion over the next few days, but don't bet on it much. I know I won't,

I'm trying to figure out how to log in to the chat on my phone... I'm going out of town next week so I'd like to figure this out so I can still chat with everyone!

I have meebo im set up on my phone, but I can't figure out how to join the chat. if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

          Thank you!

UPDATE: I can't find a jabber client for android that supports MUCs. So apparently I will not be able to log into the chat on my phone. This will really limit the amount of time I spend in chat, especially since I'm out of town and the only way for me to connect is via my phone. Looks like I'll be sticking with the IRC chat for now, since I can connect to that. Unless someone can find an app that works on my phone that supports MUCs, since the only one I found that SHOULD be able to connect (imov messenger corporate) connects to the room but doesn't support PMs... it either puts them in the normal chat window and says they're from "cs" instead of the person sending them, or else doesn't send them at all.

Yay for phones that do internet! Doing this post from my phone, so it might look weird for me.

I installed imov, tested it with jack, and it worked correctly. See attached screen shots. I set up something differently, and will get together with Wenchie to figure out what.

Glad to have been of service. I wish you the best of luck with your new chat system. That being said... I fully intend to continue to run the CS IRC channel for as long as it remains active, if even in an unofficial capacity, as a number of users have requested. As well, i have set up an independent web interface for it, as a replacement for the one i assume is being removed from the index page. It is linked in my sig.

              Cheers!

My apologies to all. I had a family emergency come up, and that kept me almost entirely offline for the past several days. As a result, I was very unable to be supportive in the chat system. It looks like I will be back tomorrow night.

I'm installing IMOV now for android, and it says it has MUC support...so I dunno we will see I may be visible popping in and out cause of testing this.

Hmm. Interesting thing I'm noticing about the new chat system; If my browser freezes or my connection cuts out, the Jabber login drops and there's no easy way to log back in. I have to go back to my bookmarked link to log in again.

***NOTE*** We have two changes to be done that will be disruptive. The first one happens tonight, and the second one will be in about a week. Once the second one is done, we'll start documenting how people can use pretty much any program they want to connect to the new chat server.

The first change, which happens tonight, is to actually use your Customers Suck! screen name and password. The chat system is very different from vBulletin, so doesn't allow all the same things in screen names that vBulletin does. As such, here's the rules to follow:

Your screen name is in all lower case. Any spaces in your screen name should be replaced with underscores ( _ ). Any exclamation marks ( ! ) in your screen name should be replaced with underscores ( _ ) as well.

Your password is unchanged, and will be entered exactly as you use it on the forums.

This change takes effect as of 6am GMT. While it is being put in place, there will be a brief outage (less than 5 minutes) for the new chat system.

Please PM Pedersen if you are having issues logging in using your screen name (or contact via any of the other instant messaging services in my contact info page.

As of now, only registered Customers Suck! screen names can log in. Please see the above post for instructions on how to deal with it if you are having issues (including whom to contact and how).

                        Thank you.

I just wanted to let everybody know about one of the issues we're working on: On occasion, people using JWChat are getting kicked out with a "Service Unavailable" error message. It's a transient error, and you can get right back in if it does occur.

The plan is to get that resolved next week, once all of our code updates are done, and likely before we get all of our documentation written.
