  • An excerpt from my friend's Facebook status.

    She works in a bakery.

Dear Customer, I don't appreciate you asking to see something in the front case, and then"feeling" it for freshness, someone might want to buy that and I doubt they want your fingers all over it. Also please stop stalking my department and wildly touching everything you see! Everything is fresh so just pick something already! Thank You

    Ew! Nasty!

I might thump a watermelon or give an orange a light squeeze to see if either one is fresh before buying, but not baked goods! Most bakery items I know of don't have a protective outer layer that has to be removed before eating.

That's just wrong. I'm guessing your friend had to throw out the stuff the SC touched, yes? I would hope the store had some kind of You Touch It, You Bought It policy, but it probably wouldn't be enforced anyway.

When I was working in a bakery, people would run off with freshly baked bread...and I mean that literally. I would pull the bread out the oven, drop it on the counter to wrap and people grabbed it and really RAN OFF.... then came back when they couldn't pay for it, for lack of BAG and PRICETAG.

I apologize for the crappy quality of the video here.

Anyway, jump ahead to about 1:20 in this and enjoy this great scene from Juzo Itami's Tampopo. It involves a little old lady getting far too excited about the food in a grocery store. Completely safe for work.
