  • Dad? What did I tell you about buying stuff "open"?

So we needed to get a new junction box for the TV because our previous one broke. We go to best buy and find one.

Me: This looks like what we need.
Dad: Probably. *picks up one marked "open"*
    Me: ...Dad? That's marked "open".
    Dad: So? It's cheaper
Me: Remember the time you got a keyboard that had a missing alt key and didn't work?
    Dad: So? It's cheaper.
Me: Sometimes these "open" things are returns...I hope this one works.

Three guesses what happened - the first two don't count.

If you guessed "The junction box was defective", you guessed correct!

Yeah, no offense guys who work at Best Buy, but if you're wondering why some of those "open" products never sell, that's why. Please stop selling obviously defective/broken products in "open" Boxes. :/ even if it's cheaper, it's still busted.

My dad does the opposite....he finds all kinds of junk metal-detecting or while he's traveling around Wisconsin for work, if he sees something on the side of the road, he has to stop and see what it is.

My mom gets so mad at him for it. There's nothing wrong with metal-detecting, but do you really need to keep everything you find?

He found a onesie for smoking pot with, and he asked me if I wanted it!

Blas, tell your mom he could end up on American Pickers and make a fortune off this stuff

Only if I know it'll work despite some 'defect' will I buy something that's on severe discount like that. Like our new fridge, it's just missing the little flip thing for the butter and it has a dent(Yay, scratch and dent!). Still works. But some piece of computer hardware... If it's important to my machine's functions and it was returned previously... NOT buying it!

There's a possibility they have no idea.

Ok, there's no excuse for the keyboard with the missing key; that should never have gone back on the shelf. But for something like a junction box, it's not visibly obvious and some people can't manage to not lie when they return things.

Although, that said, I try to avoid opened boxes. And one time, I found that every one of a particular item was in opened boxes at Fry's, so I decided that I was going to avoid that brand entirely.

In that case, I can see buying it. If there's nothing wrong, other than a cosmetic item, why not? I'm one of those that will always check out the scratch and dent area when I'm at IKEA. You never know what you'll find, and many times, there's nothing wrong with the item. Sure, some of that stuff truly is a lost cause. But, other items...are simply lacking a box (or the box was damaged, and the store assembled the item), or minor parts.

That's how I got one of my model cabinets. The box was damaged in shipping, and since there was nothing wrong with the rest of it...they'd assembled it. I was going to buy a boxed version, but after seeing the vastly-reduced price, the "junk" one came home with me. It's really meant for DVDs, but my 1/18 and 1/16 scale sports cars fit in there quite nicely

Speaking of models, some of my kits have been "open box" items. Usually, the box looks like shit, but the kit itself is complete. Not always, but usually. That's not to say I haven't been burned--I got screwed on an '85 T-bird street rod kit. A few parts were missing, along with the instruction sheet. Not really a big deal, since I only wanted the body shell, hood, and a few engine parts. But still, I'm glad it wasn't a super-rare item. Otherwise, I'd really have been SOL

My last TV was an open box item and it worked like a charm. I think the only thing wrong with it was that it had some scratches on the casing. If they allow it to be returend like anyting else, I see no problem with it.

My mum did that years ago. She got a £800 chest freezer (a bit one!) for just under £400. Lasted her nearly 10 years before something major went! All that was wrong with it was a scratch on the side (which went against the wall) where it was unloaded at the warehouse.

Yeah I buy open box items ....especially at best buy. Got my first ipod that way and it worked great for a long time. Got a surround sound system that way that worked for quite a while as well.
