  • Uh...what?

My mom was in a store the other looking for christmas presents, and she asked a saleswoman where the blouses are. The woman says "Oh, you don't want anything here, this is the petite section." My mom said "Am I not allowed to look at anything in this section?" The woman said "Oh yes, you can look at whatever you want." My mom just walked away.

I'm not sure if the woman meant to be rude or just had a brain blip. My mom is not skinny by any means considering she's had 4 kids, but she is definitely not fat. She has actually lost a lot of weight since she got diabetes, because she follows a strict diet now. But that comment would have been inappropriate no matter what she weighed. It's the Christmas season, lady, has it occurred to you she might be buying for someone else???

That type of thing just irks me. Sorry your mom went through that, some people just have no class.

Could it have been the saleslady was trying to be helpful in that she thought your mom was too tall to be a petite (the arms and length on shirts/coats are also cut shorter)? I look at petite clothing sometimes and get reminded which section I'm in by employees. I guess it depends on what her tone of voice was.

That's the kind of ignorance that loses stores sales. I've walked out on many department stores in the past when I was looking for items for other people because of this. Good thing there's online shopping; no one can make assumptions there.

So, by using the Doctor's reasoning, bow ties, fezzes and bandanas are cool.

If the store has any decent selection at all, then the Petite section is just for those who are a bit shorter than the retail ideal. Note, I did NOT say "average"--average is about 5'2"-5'4"; ideal is about 5'6"-5'8"
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

Bottom line, it's unprofessional at best to refer to customers' physicality. There's just too much margin for error if you're not giving a complement. That salesperson probably asks unpregnant women how far along they are.

i agree; assumptions are bad, very bad and lose good customers.

i'm 5'3, and petites are too short in the arm and inseam for me (i'm also rubanesque, so most junior clothes won't fit me quite right either) and i'll be damned if i meekly wander over to the polyester leisure suits and start looking.

I think she wasn't mean, just really dumb. Still, she must have caught my mom on a good day, because usually my mom doesn't put up with that crap. I kind of like to watch her in action sometimes.

I'm the same height as you, I don't consider myself petite though because I wear a larger size. In retail petite always seems to mean short AND tiny waist/hips/bust!

The saleswoman shouldn't make assumptions like that, as someone else said your mom could have been buying a gift.

I'm 5'8 and I'm borderline petite. I was taught it has nothing to do with height, or weight, but where your natural waist is. Some petite stuff looks very bad on me because the sleeves are too short or the hem falls exactly on my hips and makes them look very wide. And I can't wear petite pants, period. But the petite clothes (especially dresses) I HAVE bought are among the best-fitting outfits I've ever worn.
It's little things that make the difference between 'enjoyable', 'tolerable', and 'gimme a spoon, I'm digging an escape tunnel'.

I'm just over 5' and have to hem my petite sized pants a good 4-6 inches to make them fit.

Lol..not sure I could fit my big toe in a 'petite'. I am defined as 'husky' and have to shop in the Big and Tall stores/sections.
