    I don't know, specifically, what happened other than this: last week, they were out of town and stayed at a hotel . . . and needed to extend their stay twice. During that time, the room had been already booked. Having read stories from at least three hotel desk clerks here . . . or, sorry, whatever the job title is . . .

    I know this is on the list of things they don't like. Especially when they won't leave the room to another one. Also especially because simple foresight would have fixed this matter before leaving.

    I just apologize, because one half of those two was actively trying to pull a date out of the other for when they'd be going and was stymied by no answer until 10:30am on the day they left.

    My job title = MOD, CSR, or Head Housekeeper, depending on the day. Sometimes even Maintenance, though I'm not allowed near anything electrical (don't ask).

    It is difficult when a certain room type is booked and someone wants to stay over.

    I always suggest that, if they have at least a maximum number of nights in mind, to reserve/book the room for that many nights. We can then cancel/refund the room if they leave earlier. If they seem tentative, I'll often put in a non-guaranteed 6pm-hold reservation for the second night anyways, just in case. At my motel on a busy night, it's easier to cancel a reservation and resell it than deal with overbooking.
    Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
