  • Root Canal

Anyone ever had a root canal? I'm getting one in a few weeks and I'm wondering what to expect. I'm going to be sedated (I HATE going to the dentist), so I don't even know if I'll know what is going on. All I know is that I'll need a ride to and from the dentist's office since I'll be taking the meds before I arrive.

Never had one myself. The Wife has had five. If the dentists give you enough novocaine (tell him if he didn't), it will be painless. It is a simplified example, but the difference between filling a cavity and a root canal is how long they spend drilling.

The Wife usually requests Nitrous oxide to help her relax. If you take something before you go in, make sure the dentist is aware of it.

Try to relax. The worst part of The Wife's first root canal was the muscle strain from freaking out.

      Close enough.

I've had one. There's a lot of drilling, which was really annoying, but it wasn't particularly more of anything than a filling, really.

If only I could be so lucky.

There is no such thing as "enough novocaine" for me. I have a resistance to the stuff. I get half an hour of mostly numb, and then it just slowly stops working and no additional doses will change that. >_<

I'm the worlds biggest scared of the dentist chicken and I also go to a dentist that does sedation. You take your pills before you go in and they give you something else when you are there usually and then you aren't aware of the world for a few hours. Take advantage of the knokced out time and have your teeth cleaning done on the same appointment if you can.

Don't fret over the dentist office part at all. You won't even know anything happened. The pain after isn't usualy much to worry about either.

I have had about four of them - to be honest, the only one that caused any noticeable discomfort and the novicaine wore off was an upper canine. And even that was an ache in the bone from bone that was easily managed with OTC pain meds for the two-three days that it lasted.

I had one done to a top molar. I can honestly say it went flawlessly and it was over in about 25 minutes. After they numbed it with novocaine the only thing I felt was a lot of pushing and pressure into the tooth socket. They then put a temporary cap on it. After the novocaine wears off the tooth socket will be a little sore, like a bruise. So as long as you dont put pressure on it for a couple of weeks afterward then you'll experience little pain. It will actually be nice to have liquids hit that area and you feel a "dead spot" where there's no feeling.

I had 2 root canals done at the same time. I hate going to the dentist so bad, I have to be drugged if I'm having anything more than a cleaning done, and I shake during the cleaning.

It was by far the easiest thing I have ever done with my mouth. I recommend asking to be sedated, and go to a dentist that works with people like us. I was in and out in about 2 and a half hours (at least 30 minutes were waiting for drugs to kick in) After an hour or 2 to sleep off the drugs, I was fine. I went bar hopping that night. (I didn't drink though.) I got a full script for pain meds, I took 2. At night. Just in case. I never hurt. The swelling was completely gone in just a day or 2. I would recommend not eating first, especially if you have a weak gag reflex. Also, go for a morning appointment. Less time to worry about it and less time to go without food that way.

A word of advice though. If they say no straws. They MEAN no straws. It does NOT feel good to suck on a straw.

I had one done 6 years ago...local anesthetics and it wasn't all that bad. Though for a good half hour to hour and a half my mouth was numb from all the Novocaine. I just closed my eyes the entire time they were working on me until it was all over. I felt great after all the numbness was gone.
