  • Small town, small business

    Nothing bad, just... interesting.

I have a second job, starting the 3rd. My friend met "this guy" at, of all places, a gay club, who happens to be looking for support techs so he can restructure and hopefully expand.

So me, and this friend, head out to this tiny town a half hour north of me to meet this guy at their shop. Once there, I filled out an application that "definitely wasn't plagiarized from <famous fast food chain>", and they conducted an "interview" that basically consisted of me, my friend, the "guy" (who turned out to be the company president ), and his VP chatting nonchalantly about whatever came to mind for half an hour or so.

After that, we went to a cafe another half an hour away to eat (whom they're doing a POS install for). We spent an hour or two there, eating big burgers and talking about business and whatever else.

It was a surreal experience. And at the same time, filled me with hope.

It's a small computer shop in a fittingly small town. They're rolling over a new business model where you're basically paid on commission alone. (Not sure how that interacts with the laws, but apparently, they have their own lawyer looking at this stuff so I'm guessing they've got it worked out.)

Even if I get fired in the first week, this should be fun.

    Oh, I forgot to mention.

My job at The Gerbil is very back-room, very little customer contact.

My new job is VERY customer-facing. By the sounds of it, I'll be working directly on customers' machines and talking them through things.

Odds are, you're gonna be seeing a LOT more of me.

Sounds like yays all around. Better job for you, more stories for us.
Something kind of sad about the way that things have come to be.
Desensitized to everything, what became of subtlety?
