  • Sighting: Worth Complaining Over?

We have a wood pellet burning stove in our house, we've had it for almost 10 years now. Buying pellets for it can be a bit of a challenge, we've used everything from Orange Apron to Blowes to an online retailer to order a ton of pellets that we store in the garage through the season.

Before the last storm hit the Northeast, we used up all the bags we had on the pallet, and wanted to stock up before we got slammed with another storm. So on Jan 11th my mother calls a garden store two towns over and orders a ton to be delivered on the 14th. We don't usually go to this garden store, we've had okay luck with them in the past but their prices are high and their delivery is so-so. But we didn't want to be without pellets so we made the order.

Jan 12th I get a call from an employer wanting to set up a job interview for the 14th at 2 pm. I go ahead and make that appointment, figuring the store will call us and confirm delivery times and location, and I can tell them to make it a morning delivery instead.

Sure enough, Thursday the 13th the store calls to confirm the delivery. I took the call and asked the person on the phone if she happened to know what time on Friday I could expect the delivery. She didn't know. So I asked if it would be okay to put in the notes that I would prefer a morning delivery because by 1:15 no one will be there to greet them. With this store, if they miss you, they don't leave a notice and the next time they come out they tack on an extra charge for having to repeat the trip. Also, with this store and where our house is located on their route, we're usually the first delivery or the last one. I told them 1:15 because it was at least a 30 minute drive into the city where I was going for the interview, and I didn't want to be late because that doesn't look good at all. The phone rep makes the note and assures me she'll tell the driver.

Jan 14th comes, so I'll make a rundown of exactly what happened and when. To play it safe, I had set my alarm for 7:30 that morning.

7:30 - Get up, shower, and dress in some bum-around clothes to wear until i get ready for the interview.
8:00 - Start watching for truck.
10:30 - Phone rings, my mother calls from work to see if they've come yet. They haven't. She tells me to call the store if they haven't shown up by 12.
12:00 - Call store, get different person than I had yesterday. They tell me the truck is en route, and the driver knows no one will be present at 1:15. Driver has also mentioned coming back at 3:30 if they miss the 1:15. 3:30 is still too tight as I don't know how long the interview would take and both parents will still be at work. Phone rep notes this and makes sure to tell the driver.
12:30 - Realize how close this is getting, call employer and tell them I won't be able to make the interview. She is very forgiving and we reschedule for another date and time. She then asks for the store's name so she can avoid going there herself.
1:00 - Mother calls a second time, still no truck. I tell her I rescheduled my interview. I can practically hear her clench her jaw over the phone. She plans on calling the store to complain at some point.
1:30 - I hear a loud beeping noise and see a semi slowly backing up our driveway. Finally. I open the garage and greet the delivery guy (who I swear looked spot on like Mickey Rooney...) He gets set to unload and takes nearly ten minutes to situate himself before the platform he's standing on gets lowered. He sticks the pallet in the corner of the garage where I had marked, I sign the receipt, we're done.
1:45 - Truck pulls out of driveway.

Mom did call back a third time after 2, and when I told her the times they got here and left she was furious. Even if I was in my car and ready to pull out of the driveway when the truck did, I still would have been late for that interview. She wants to call the store and complain (yeah, a whole week later), because in her mind to force someone to pass up a job interview in this economy to take a delivery is unacceptable and 1:30 pm is in no way a "morning" delivery. I told her that if they had said a morning delivery and just didn't come at all, on top of making me miss the interview waiting for them, then yeah, I'd complain. But we got our pellets, I feel like just letting it pass. She doesn't think so.

What do you think? Worth raising a stink over?

Side note: I made it to my rescheduled interview and have a second, working interview this Tuesday

Lucky you that the potential employer was so forgiving. Congratulations. And that was one mess of a delivery.

I would not only complain, I would inform them they have lost a customer for life... and actually go through with it.

In the future, just make sure you stock up. On items I use all the time; soap, toothpaste, etc., I always have at least two: the one I'm using, and the one I will use after. When I use the first, I buy the next and use the second. That way if anything ever comes up and I can't get what I need right away, I'm set.

I really, really hate to say this, but I think this was more your fault for scheduling something else on the day you already had the delivery scheduled and did not know what time of day the delivery would get there.

I can somewhat agree with dbuzman, I would have set the latest 12:00. I would also chave considered a refuse if they didn't show up then.

to a degree, it was bad planning, but they should call and confirm; you did let them know you needed an earlier delivery, which seems to have gone in one ear and out the other of the person taking the order.

yes, i'd complain, since you did tell them you wouldn't be available after x time.

            congratulations!
            look! it's ghengis khan!
Sorry, but while I can do many things, extracting heads from anuses isn't one of them. (so sayeth the irv)

This is true, however I was counting on them to actually have a morning delivery. I did mention their delivery in the past had been so-so, but that was because they'd tell us they'd be at the house at, say, 10:00, but ring the doorbell at 8:00. They very rarely keep to the times they actually tell you, but they've never done it quite like this. This, I think, is the first time they told me it would be a morning delivery and had it be an afternoon one instead.

Also, I took the interview time I was given because the last time I had to ask for a different date on an interview, the employer had then said "never mind" and hung up. I didn't want to risk losing this job; this is only my second job interview in 4 months since I was let go from uBash, and I've applied to nearly 30 places since then.

I honestly think too much time has passed.

I'm going with too much time passed and if you (or your mom) were going to complain, it should have been that day.

So, by using the Doctor's reasoning, bow ties, fezzes and bandanas are cool.
