  • Kid gave me quite a scare today! (aka - flu sucks)

Ok, so I'm sitting on the couch around 2pm today, perusing my favorite site (cs.com of course) and my 20 year old son comes down the steps from his room and begins walking in circles and muttering to himself.

Background: He'd been feeling crappy the past couple of days, but it didn't seem too serious. Sore throat, cough and kind of achy, stuff like that.

I ask him whats up, and he looks at me with this crazed look in his eyes and starts saying "Dude..dude.." like he's talking to one of his friends.

I was alarmed at this point and stood up and noticed he was sweating and shivering at the same time. I touched his forehead and it was so hot that it made my hand really hot. I gave him some advil, which I practically had to put in his mouth and force feed him the water to swallow it with.

So I told him to go upstairs and get dressed and we'd go to urgent care. I sat down on the couch and began to put my shoes on, and he sat down next to me, grabbed my leg and laid in my lap, whimpering.

Now, this is a kid who is sort of a mama's boy, but (like me) is not physically demonstrative AT ALL.

I finally had to go get his jeans myself and dress him and lead him out to my car. The urgent care is around 10 minutes away and about 5 minutes into the ride, he straightens up and looks at me, very confused and asks me how he got in the car and where were we going. I touched his forehead again and, while it was still hot, it was not NEARLY as bad as before. I can only assume that the advil had started to work a bit.

Long story short, we got to the urgent care and they examined him and did something called a 'rapid flu' test on him by sticking a long q-tip looking thing up his nose. A few minutes later they came in and showed us the little square test thing that showed positive for 'flu A', whatever that means. He gave us samples of some decongestant and a prescription for a cough medicine with codeine in it. Also, of course, the typical flu remedies and what not.

Point is: He'll be 21 in August and I'd be hard pressed to remember a time I ever saw him THIS sick. It was truly scary when he was completely out of his mind and babbling incoherently. I've never seen anything like it. The doctor had said he had seen a couple of strains of this really vicious flu in the past several weeks.

Next year he's definitely getting a flu shot.

    Evidently, that's going around.

    I'm sick right now.

I started feeling bad last week. Just a mild runny nose off and on, a little gunk in the back of my throat. Little tiredness. Thought I was pretty much better more or less by Saturday, when the fire happened, upon which I breathed a bunch of smoke and chemical. Later that night, I started feeling like shit (which I chalked up to the fire stuff) but then started suddenly running a very rapid onset fever and more feeling like like shit.

Last night, I was straight up sick.

I'm pretty much okay now. Feel weak, and my sinuses are pretty well screwed up, but I think I'll live. Guys at husband's work says the flu this year does that, starts out barely there and then when you think you're better, you get your ass kicked.

So the husband goes to the doc today (something else entirely on top of what I had) turns out, yeah, he had the flu. So I guess it's safe to say we all had the flu over here. But nobody got as sick as it sounds like your son was. I think I had the highest temp, and it was only 101, and I wasn't even so uncomfortable from it I felt inclined to treat it. I just let it burn. Sounds like we all got pretty lucky.

Glad your boy is doing better.

What did I miss?? Is everyone ok?

And yeah, I was sick 2 weeks ago, but not nearly as bad as him.

Oh, forgot to add: For added fun, I got to go Kroger to get his scrip filled....during yet another pre-snow rush.

It's the first time in recent memory that I've ever walked in this particular Kroger and every.single.cart was gone from the front holding area. I felt so sorry for the employees.

Seriously - how bare does your fucking kitchen have to be in order to STARVE during a snowstorm? The worst one I remember was the blizzard of '77 and my mom said we were only in the house for 4 days. Even with that horrible scenario, our kitchen would have had to have NOTHING in it in order to have starved. Why the hell these people feel the need to swarm the grocery stores is totally beyond me.

Oh, no no no, it ain't like that.

See thread here. The dumbass that lives behind me set his and everyone else's yards on fire.

        Everyone's fine.

As for bare cupboards, I feel ya. That happens here and usually, it doesn't even stick when it snows here. Yet everyone runs out to buy up all the TP and bread.

I think it's just part of the whole "snow ritual". It's ridiculous. I'm proud to say I don't do that.

I've been sick quite often this winter, it's been alternating between nasty head colds and 24/48 hour flu strains that include puking or the shits

It doesn't help that not only is there a snowstorm coming it also the first of the month and around here that means 10 for $10.00 sales and food stamps coming in.

wow... make sure he's sucking down a lake of water and other clear fluids. Dehydration is funny/horrible. Glad that stage didn't last long! Also glad you could get him into the car.

                Holy crap! Glad he's OK.

That must have been so scary to deal with.

It wasn't easy. It was just kinda walking behind him and prodding with my hand on his back. Good thing, too - because he's over 6 feet tall. It was almost like dealing with a sleep walker, if that makes any sense.

And I actually think it was the crazy high fever that caused him to act like that, but I can't be sure. It was scary as hell though, either way.

My niece and nephew have it. My nephew isn't too bad off (yet), but my niece is very sick. She's been running a 102 fever for 5 days. She didn't want to eat at all for 3 days, and anytime she had anything to drink, she threw it up.

Seeing the picture of her holding a bucket and looking like she got hit by a truck, while cute in a way, broke my heart.

I hope the N&N get better soon.

                    -EDIT-

The nephew has now joined the puke fest.

I agree that it was most likely the fever.

I'm sure it was heartbreaking - and yes, totally terrifying.

Some people talk off their head when they have a high fever. My sister used to. How's he doing now?

Wow, I wonder what his temp was! Mine got up to 103.8 when I got sick last year (a year ago this month!) but I was still perfectly aware of my surroundings. I was not, however, able to drive (I could barely keep my eyes open half the time; I just wanted to curl up in a ball and sleep), so my mom had to come pick me up and take me to the doctor. Then she dropped me off at their house where I went in through the garage door, stumbled 3 feet to the couch and laid there for a couple hours while she went to the store for drugs and Gatorade. I spent the next several days at their house, in my dad's PJ pants and t-shirts, seesawing between almost normal and ~102. Every time my temp came down I'd wake up drenched and had to change. I went home for a few days and wound up with "borderline" pneumonia and spent several more days at their house.

This year I got a flu shot.

I figured as much, Peppergirl. Most sons are taller than their mothers, it's almost a trope! Or... it is...?
And, BE, that still sounds better than what VictorySabre's kid-relations has (have?). I hate hate hate vom. So gross. I hope the small ones feel better soon, or it might be a trip to the hospital for them too! (small bodies= not much to deal with illness to begin with...)
I got a flu shot, and then a few hours later it was like I had food poisoning. Thankfully it stopped. Still meant a sleepless night.

Thanks so much for all your kind thoughts, everyone. It really means alot.

He seems to be feeling a bit better, but I'm sure he has another few days of feeling really awful.

I'm dosing myself with vitamin C and spraying lysol around everytime he comes near.
