  • Ice Cream Rage

Today I decided I would buy, for the first time in a long time, my favourite coffee flavoured icecream, for a little treat. It used to have a strong glossy paper lid which you could take off with no problem.

Just now, I discovered that the lid has been replaced with a hard plastic cover whereby you have to pull off a small strip of platic which is difficult to grip, then pull back the unyielding plastic lid at that point.

I cut my finger and it took me so long and was so difficult I had to call boyfriend to help me.Its a trap so that people don't ruin their diets!I don't think I could have opened it on my own!

Seriously though, in a time where packaging is supposed to be less for the environment why these changes?

food safety and tamper resistance-I work in a food testing laboratory, and have for almost three years. Products packaged in "environmentally friendly" paper or paperboard/cardboard invariably have more contamination than their plastic packaged counterparts. Also plastic is recyclable(when washed), paper is not when contaminated by food products, and contrary to popular belief, paper packaging does not biodegrade* in a landfill(and being "glossy cardboard" it was most likely plastic or wax coated, and not biodegradable at all). Also due to limited exposure to air, food items packaged in plastics have a longer shelf life, and are therefore less likely to be wasted or disposed of due to being expired or "stale". I've had a loaf of bread still perfectly edible after a month when packaged in a plastic bag, but a baugette of french bread in the standard paper, two or three days tops before it becomes inedible.

*seriously they have found 50 year-old newspapers that were still readable in landfills, as well as 25 year-old hotdogs, corncobs, and grapes-that were still recognizable.

Needlenose pliers in the kitchen. Other than pulling out fish bones, they have a multitude of uses =)

I love my job....sadly there are now MANY foods I used to love that I avoid at all costs now...chances are in the last 6 months something you purchased at the store has been through my previous lab/in my hands either in it's entirety or components of it(we tested both finished products and ingredients). I would estimate it at 99% positive of that occurring(I've touched* what's on your table/in your cupboard), for anyone living in the US that doesn't shop exclusively at the farmer's market.

*not the EXACT product you have in your possession, but from the same lot/batch.
