  • Members of CS, you have taught me well.

Went grocery shopping today. Picked out a fresh pineapple. They were $2.98 each, but there was no sticker or PLU number on the one I picked out, so I remembered the PLU number for when we got to the checkout lane. As expected, after the clerk inspected the pineapple, he reached for his PLU book.

    "It's 4433."
"*punches the numbers in, verifies it's correct, then stares at me* Do you work here?"
    "Huh? Uh, no."
"Did you used to work here?"
"Um, no. I just saw that it didn't have a sticker on it so I made a note of the PLU number."
    "*stares at me some more*"

I took it as a compliment. I think.

Hehe. Obviously a new one for him.

I like Wegmans cuz they have a scale that will print out a bar code to put on your bag. You just punch in the item number, and if it's something that is sold by the piece, the number of pieces and then the cashier just has to scan the bar code.

I still remember a lot of produce codes from when I worked a grocery store in high school. Mainly the most common, the ones I rang up several times a day. I usually throw the cashier a bone when they're scrambling to look up a PLU. Also, self-checkout lanes that let you punch the PLU in are awesome if you're a former grocery peon.

I am so glad I don't have to deal with PLU's anymore. The Bar uses Aloha, and it's great. Much easier, much faster. much more efficient.

I still remember dealing with PLU's for any modifiers we had to make to an order at the brewpub 15 years ago. Hell, within a couple months I knew more of the PLU's than most of the longtime staff, to the point that seasoned veterans would turn to me and ask, "What's the PLU for 'no fries'?"

I have no idea why, but to this day, 15 years later, I can still tell you that the PLU for "to go" was 33.
