  • Local manhunt - quite disturbing.

There's a manhunt going on in my neighbourhood tonight.

A young man stabbed his stepfather, mother, and sister. Then stabbed another person to steal his car, and ran over a pedestrian. I'm a bit too wound up to sleep, so here's a bit of stream-of-consciousness to work out some of the anxiety thudding through my chest.

I can hear the helicopters. It's a jarring sound, to hear them so low. We're not anywhere near the helipads, so it's not a standard sound. Intersperse them with the random bleats of sirens and the general background noise that an entire precinct of cops can make by just walking around and having radios on, and there's a pattern of noise that is atypical for even the most active night here. It creates a sense of awareness or anticipation. A feeling of "what happens next?" or "what do I do now?"

The cats are abnormally awake. Inspecting all the corners of the apartment, startling every time a sharp noise sounds. I can't say I blame them - the moment I stepped out onto the avenue and realized just how flooded with cops this area is, I started becoming excessively aware, as well. By tomorrow, this will be all over the local, and possibly national news. Hopefully, at that point, this man will have been caught. Maybe we'll even know a motive or reason behind the snap.

Finally, the helicopter noises are fading a bit. They must have moved up the line to the next circle for a larger sweep. There won't be much sleep in the borough tonight. But I must go, for I have a long day tomorrow, and I can only lay awake listening to helicopters for so long before the droning thwacks of the rotors becomes white noise.

You've already left chat, but I hope you get some rest tonight. Have a safe trip tomorrow.
