I could freakin' cry right now. Even though I've been told not to.

I got rid of AVG a while ago on my comp. I now have Avast, which works nicely. However, it's been telling me I need to do a boot-time scan. For those unfamiliar with Avast, what this does is it scans your entire system pre-boot-up (before your OS loads).

So I finally decide 'ok, fine. I'll do it' and set it to run all frelling night. Once I'd set it, I turned off the monitor, the mouse, and the keyboard like I do every night and went to bed. Well, I come to check on it this morning and....the monitor light is beeping. Which means the monitor is turned on. My first response? "Ohshit! Nononononono!"

Sure enough, instead of the scanner, my comp had been booted up. And Avast put up its pop-up once again to tell me to do the freakin' boot-scan. Apparently, my mom specifically needed to use *my* computer for something that couldn't be done on Dad's computer or the laptop.

May not seem like a big deal, except that this damned scan takes more than 2 hours to complete (I know this because I've tried doing the scan before, come back nearly 3 hours later, and it's still doing it)

Ouch, one of the very reasons why when I had to do a deep scan I would tape a note to the monitor. Didn't help one time but the spaghetti dumped onto his head made sure notes were read better.

Yeah, I'm going to have to completely restart the scan tonight. And I'll be sure to attach a note to my monitor saying "For the love of all that is holy, do *not* touch!" I'll use one of my nice new Sharpies. XD The really thick ones.

Not knowing what PC you have, but is there any chance you can take the keyboard & mouse to bed with you too after you've started the scan?
        Arp happens!

Just when I was getting used to yesterday, along came today.

I technically could. They're both wireless. Wouldn't prevent people from hitting the freakin' power (or restart) button, I'm afraid. x.o

Do you have duct tape and a small saucer? Tape the saucer to the case so it covers the power and reset buttons. Attach the note to the saucer. And a backup note to the monitor. And take away the mouse & keyboard. That might work. I know you're dealing with family and not just end users, so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt.

If they still don't get the hint then you'll have to go to more drastic measures. Such as installing a false power button attached to a stun gun. Make it bright red and label it 'Do Not Touch - High Voltage!' You just know someone will push it...
