  • Wow! What a great example!

I witnessed this a few years ago, so its not verbatim, but fairly close.

I was on my way home from work. At the time, I used to work at a home improvement store where the employees are famous for wearing orange aprons. Was working in seasonal, so was on my feet for many hours a day. This particular day, I was hungry. So just coming out of work, I stopped at Wendy's.
    Annnnddd, I witnessed this......

    Cast of characters:

    NC: New Cashier
    M: Manager
    Me:
    SC: Who else?

I walk in to hearing this elderly man screaming at the cashier:

SC: "I ordered (insert meal) and I got the wrong thing! Don't you know anything! You stupid girl! Its not hard! Why isn't my order right? I want a refund and my meals for free!

NC: "Sir, I am sorry. Just let me....."

SC: "NO! I want my d@mn refund NOW!"

    NC: "Ok sir, just give......"

SC: "NOW! AND GET YOUR F@#!ING MANAGER!"

He stomped off and sat with his wife and GRANDKIDS/KIDS!

Note: It was like 3pm and nobody else was in the restaurant. By the time he left, the poor girl was in tears. Another cashier took my order then I waited off to the side. The girl was still crying. I saw she was wearing a trainee badge. I told her not to worry and that not all customers are rude like that guy. Made sure I was loud enough for him to hear! Pretty sure, if I remember correctly, I got the cattbutt face from him.

Oh and then the manager came out! She asked me what the problem is. She thought I was the one complaining. I said: "Oh, I am fine. Just waiting for my food! Its that jerk over there that seems to have some kind of problem. However, I think your service is great!"

Talk about setting a great example for your young grandkids/children!

Yes! If more people would do this when customers were being sucky, there would be far fewer of them!

It's not that hard, huh? I'd love to see these assholes try and do our jobs sometime. Bet they wouldn't last ten minutes

Ever see that very old film 'Laughter in Paradise'? Where a millionaire practical joker dies and leaves his money divided between four relatives, but only on condition that each one fulfills a specific task?
There was one sour old sister who always treated her domestic servants like dirt, and her task was that she had to take a position as a domestic herself, for 3 months (I think) and not get fired from it. Opened her eyes, I can tell you. That's what people like that need.

We had a customer who would complain everytime she was in our store. She was always saying how stupid the cashiers were and such.

She got a job there as a cashier. She started off by telling us all that she will show us how real cashiers work.

Her 1st shift by herself she never came back after lunch.HAHa

Oh how I'd love to see some of my SC's work my job. My boss would have them running for the door by the end of a shift--if the other customers didn't have them running first! See, the thing about my job is that most people think that a C-store clerk just stands around and looks pretty. Wrong. We bust our asses every single day. Yes, please, oh so high and mighty SC, have my job. See how long you last--and don't let the door hit you as you're running out of it when you realize you can't handle it!

Have a nice big slice of humble pie, honey!

Did she ever come back as a customer?

my brother worked at a C-store. he had one SC complain at him, saying "I'll have your job!!!!" So, he threw his jacket at her and said, "go for it, your relief will be here at 1am. have fun!" and he walked off, leaving the SC with her jaw on the floor.

That "you're uneducated because you work retail/customer service" bit always boggles my mind. I have two college diplomas and I work customer service. I don't want to work in my field (animation) because I've done a lot of freelance stuff and found out its not really for me. (I do it as a hobby still tho.)

Most of the people that I've worked with in retail (and in my current CSR job) were either still attending college or had already graduated. A lot of them have their Masters, BA's, College/University diplomas etc and just decided that their field of study wasn't for them.

Personally, I enjoy my job and so do my coworkers. I really don't know why people just assume that retail workers/CSR's are uneducated.

As the saying goes, assuming makes an ASS out of U and ME!

I had to be really careful the other day. I was having a conversation about looking for work with a friend said "have you considered crappy retail jobs for the meantime?" and I replied something like "I'm even considering retail for a proper job". I don't have a problem with retail being someone's proper job and really hate people assuming that it isn't one.

I so wanted to break out the on her.
I am so SO glad I was not present for this. There would have been an unpleasant duct tape incident. - Joi

While I have *felt* that level of frustration with Wendy's, I have never taken it out on the cashier. I've never ONCE in my entire adult life walked out of a Wendy's with exactly what I ordered. Not once

Yep, my advice - be nice to retail workers, you may be one someday. Just cause you plan otherwise doesn't mean you won't. Many people who think they're so above working retail are just one layoff away from it. Nowadays loads of people who qualify for so called "better" jobs get layed off, have no savings, go thru what unemployment compensation they can get, then take any job they can get, including retail. Not to menion students who's financial aid no longer covers all they need. And those who need to earn a living until their real passion (the novel, paintings, hand made jewelry, etc) starts earning. There are load of reasons for people to work retail that have nothing to do with their education.

And not only that, but even if it were true (and it isn't) that all those who work retail do it because they don't have the education for other jobs - since when does a lack of a formal degree make a person dumb? Education and intelligence are NOT the same thing. Loads of extremely intelligent people either can't go on to higher education, or simply choose not to - for a world of reasons.

Not to mention that working retail serves a purpose to the public - we all need people to prepare and serve our fast food and restaurant meals, check out our groceries, mix our paints, put all the stuff on shelves that we so need to buy. All of which, IMHO, are more essential services than some jobs done in big corporate offices by those with college degrees.

(anyone want the soap box next, it's free now, LOL)

                          Madness takes it's toll....

the one thing that amazes me still to this day is that half of my pizza place is either in school (college or tech school or say vet tech school) or has degrees already (me being one of them). I got my degree and was in the corp world for 12 years, entrusted with million dollar or company critical projects, had to write detailed proposials, crunch numbers for said projects and proposials, give detailed and menaingful reports, manage "stuff"and people, think "outside the box", etc.

It still surprises our area manager (and the GM at times) that I trained to think critically or pay attention to details, formulate ideas, think independantly creatively and critically, etc.

I can hold relevant conversations with the area manager giving details of my job from the employee view with a financial aspect, job details and stupid stuff we have to put up with. his reply is "What, are you going to make this your life long job????" just becasue I can interact with him on HIS level (and YES given a little time I COULD do his job not that I want to but....). and it has been so long since he got blisters on his feet that he has long forgotten what it is to be a peon.

I went back to this type of job mostly because I got tired of all of the corp BS and politics and protection.
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.

What a nasty piece of work. Unfortunately, I see this all the time, people cursing in front of their kids and grandkids. No wonder today's youth is so messed up. It's like they're encouraging it.
This story reminded me of when I went to Wendy's with my brother, and he ordered with his gift card. The manager there was soooooooooooooooo mean to the trainee cashier, because something was wrong with processing the card. He screamed at her DO IT AGAIN! NO AGAIN! NO! AGAIN! I was so shocked, I told him that I would be reporting his vile behavior to corporate. He didn't even bat an eye and shrugged. Figures.
