  • Crazy Craigslist Biotch (expletives)

I'm an intern for a documentary filmmaker and she has put me in charge of hiring someone to design a website to promote her upcoming film. I do so, and stipulating in the notice that the film is very low budget and that only a small stipend can be provided. Keep in mind this was also put in the "Gigs" section, not the "Jobs" section. The whole purpose of the section is to post low- and non-paying short-term positions.

Cue crazy Craigslist biotch who sends me this e-mail:

    -----
Your posting on craigslist computer gigs will be flagged for removal. Why is it that every single broke mother fucker that makes a film is coming to craigslist and crying poverty? What the fuck did film makers do before the internet? If you cannot afford to pay for the work then fuck off and drop the film. If you cannot pay for the internet work you most likely need to promote the crap film then borrow some money. Fucking broke parasites.
    -----

    My response:

Dear Ms. [LAST NAME -- full name is in her e-mail address]:

After reviewing the Craigslist Terms of Service, I can find no prohibition on posting positions in the "Gigs" section with low pay. Those who object to our offer need not apply, and the specifics of the compensation to be offered will be settled via private contract. This listing will be reposted and frivolous flagging of our material will be appealed to Craigslist.

Further contact with me or [COMPANY NAME] Films will be construed as harassment and will be reported to NYU-ITS and NYPD.

    Sincerely,

    [MY NAME]
    -----

She breaches this and sent me this tonight:

    -----
Yap yap yap. report the shit all you want. You posted this shit and I explained myself. Furthermore, if you posted in a public place and I responded.... it is not harassement. Good luck with filing. Lucky for you the filing would be free since you are broke. You also now try to say compensation would be settled via private contract. sure it will liar. Now there is compensation. Why would someone wait to speak with you to find out that you are broke and cannot afford to pay for the work as you clearly stated in the original posting. Now you blow smoke. Fucking liar. Hey try to appeal the flagging we will do. It will go nowhere. Guarantee it will go nowhere. Broke bastard.

Geeze lady, if the position doesn't pay enough then don't apply for it. Big whoop. We got loads of replies anyway.

Ms [Last Name] is probably the same type of person who expects hand made things to cost pennies, people to work as late as she wants them, and people to kiss her feet. You know the type, know better about everything then anybody else.

So, What kind of action are you taking against the Craig'slist Queen? I want to know if it will be worth her sticking her nose into where she didn't need too. I'm curious, how can stuff get removed from craigslist if it doesn't violate any policy? Anyone can remove anything just because they feel like it?

I think posts can only be removed by CL if they're flagged multiple times or are obviously fishy (wrong category, scams, etc).

Wow, why does she care so much?? Actually, one of my first jobs was hiring for a non-profit, jobs which paid slightly less on average than comparable ones in the for-profit sector. I would post openings on Craigslist, and for some reason one or two people a week just had to send me the bitchiest emails about how the jobs didn't pay enough. Um, then DON'T APPLY FOR IT!!

Seriously, though, people like that lady have too much time and think they are so special that they deserve only to be offered the highest paying jobs

I've reported her to Craigslist and Yahoo! Mail (her e-mail is from Yahoo!...very fitting since she's a yahoo herself har har har). I've traced her IP address and it doesn't look like she's an NYU student, so I don't think our ITS department can do anything. She's from the Yonkers area (very fitting since she's very bonkers har har har). It's not worth getting the NYPD and Yonkers police involved at this time.

I have not responded to that second e-mail nor do I plan to.

Unfortunately craigslist is overrun by flaggers who form groups and flag anything they don't agree with. I once tried to rehome a pet for free and it kept getting flagged, even though it was not against the terms of use.

                        WTF??

I've got a friend who is trying to make it in movie production in NY and she is thrilled whenever she gets a paying gig. Even if the gig doesn't pay much, she is happy that it's not another "resume builder." I was under the impression that's how things worked--you get paid very little or not at all for most stuff with the hope of making connections and doing good work to help you get the real jobs down the line.

I got my current job through Craiglist.

Of course there were hundreds of other job listings that I wasn't interested in or didn't qualify for, but I kept looking, just ignored the ones that wouldn't work for me, and only responded to the ones that looked promising.

Amazing how well the system works if you actually work with the system.

Even if flagged multiple times, the post still has to violate terms of use, iirc.

Good. She's just a bitch looking for a fight. Probably hates the movie industry and/or the RIAA and is taking a cheap shot because she thinks she can.

One question: Why the flying fuck does she CARE??? I mean...why is it her business? Who made her Queen of Craigslist?? Wow!
OMG, her twin sister lives in Oregon, LOL. We have one of those Queens of CL here as well. It had become her mission in life to bring me to the "proper" way of posting an ad on CL.

I've been doing a "spring cleaning/downsizing" via CL for the last year or two, gradually getting rid of what I don't use/need. Have had dozens if not hundreds of ads, never a complaint on this from anyone else.

CL suggests (it isn't even an actual rule) that when you sell you an item you've posted, you delete the ad, rather than edit it to say "sold". Makes sense, and basically applies to single item ads, so CL isn't cluttered with ads that aren't actually selling anything anymore. I always do that on single item ads.

However, I have posted ads where I have multiple items in one ad, with photos that show multiple items. When one item from the list sells, I put "sold" beside that item, and keep the same ad, at least until there are enough sold items to re-photograph and re-write the ad. I don't just delete the item from the list, as it would still be in the photo, and I'd have people emailing me about the item in the photo that isn't on the list, and complaining when I say it's sold. This way it's clear, and no one wastes time emailing about sold items.

CL Queen has decided that this is against the rules (and a sin against mankind, the way she rants on about it). I began by pointing out it isn't a rule, only a suggestion, she continues to insist it's a rule. I pointed out why I do it, why it makes sense, how long it would take to re-photograph, re-write and repost an ad say, 50 times as I sold each of 50 items of a collection. I tell her how much worse it would be if someone had to scroll down 50 individual ads, so I could easily delete each one as sold. She continues to insist I take it down, in case someone, somewhere, does a search on that exact item and loses 30 seconds of their life when it comes up listed as "sold" in the ad.

I finally told her I blocked her emails to me (they still went to my junk file, so I could check to make sure she didn't email anything really loony). Once she begain tossing in Biblical references and insults on my morality, I did report her to CL as harrassing, but never got any response. And once I informed her I'd reported her to CL, and any further contact would be reported to the police, she finally gave up (after one or two last attempts to convince me the error of my ways.

Oh, and this has happened twice (same lady), every time I do an ad that way, she starts up again, til she realizes it's me and we have a round or two before I again mention the police and she eventually backs off.

I don't post address or phone in my ads, and have kept her emails so I would not respond to an inquiry on an item for sale to her email address, so I'm not afraid. But damn, some people have way too much time on their hands. If you want to fight for a cause, there are sure a lot better causes than CL police.

                              Madness takes it's toll....
                              Please have exact change ready.
