  • Anyone know about Airbrushes

Does anyone here know aynthing about airbrushes, specifically in related to wargaming minature painting, as I may be getting one, but kinda hard to choose, will have a budget of £300 and was thinking about getting the "AB-AS-186 Airbrushing Kit With Infinity Solo Airbrush "

    from here

    Thanks.

    A) I know very very little as I've just got into airbrushing myself.
    B) I dunno what kits or prices will be like in your neck of the woods. I picked up a compressor and two-step "Badger" brand airbrush recently for NZ$360.

After all that - I got the two step and am happy with it. Twostep is pressing down on the lever to start air flow, then sliding it back and forth to control how much paint comes out. It is amazing for control, and the layers are so much smoother. Be warned, GW paints tend to make the 'brush need a clean out fairly often, and you'll need to water them down - Best consistency is milk-like, my research has found. Other paints I don't know - Although apparently Vellejo (Sp?) has an airbrush ready range.

Model wise - At the moment, I'd say it'll be good for nice smooth base coats of armour colour (On a Marine size model) and pick out finer details (eyes, under armour) by brush - On tanks/jacks its good for more stuff, as they ofcourse have more room/bigger details. And I wish I'd gotten mine BEFORE I got a baneblade. lol. I found I've found other things to paint that I wouldn't before (i.e. xbox controller, hobby kit models) aswell, yet my original reason for purchase was the same as yours.

All in all.... I dunno if this post even helps... heh

Seconded with Dave's StarShipModeler link, and I agree that two-stage is the way to go, especially for fine work like on miniatures. When it comes to paint, I've found the finer the pigment size, the better. Vallejo and Reaper Master Series have been good to me.

Here's another model-related link, specifically, to their "paint" forum. Most of the messages are aimed at painting model cars and trucks, but some guys do work on figures now and then.

Decided to, if i get it, get the Infinity 2 in 1, it's double action and gravity fed (I've been told this is the best combo) with two interchangable nozzles and needles (0.15mm and 0.4mm), plus with the 186/9 compressor. It's also got a few neat features that seem to be great for consistency.
