  • A little bit of good news

So I was told off the record that I was being made redundant from my office job. Due to the government cuts, evening classes have been ruled "non-essential" in the area, so my job was going to be eliminated.

Well, thankfully my boss disagrees. She feels that evening classes are essential, and that they help integrate a school into a community. So she made it clear when the school budget was being worked out, that she wanted my job kept.

This has literally just fallen into place today, so it is still not set in stone, but they want me to stay! They also gave me a new permanent contract for my classroom job.

There is one catch though...I am going to lose about eight hours a week off the office job. The evening classes will start later, but finish at the same time. But hey, it's better than facing the prospect of looking for a new job!

                    Yay! Happy Dance!!

Out of curiosity, are the evening classes free or do people pay for them? Because if they're paid, wouldn't that help offset some of the evening class/budget issue?

The people who run the classes or events pay us rent for the room. So the theory of my job is that the more evening classes I organise, the more money the school gets, and that money is used to pay my wage.

But there are so many problems. The main one is the amount of red tape involved when getting new people for classes. As soon as they hear of all the things they need, they normally run a mile. In my time in this job, I have only been able to set up a handful of classes. The rest of the ones that run are regulars that have been going for years.

So glad you have someone fighting for you there, though losing hours has to suck. It sounded like you were a bit tight anyway since you were talking before about maybe taking a temporary shift at the bar from hell. Maybe you can pick up some sort of supplementary job at the school like subbing or some such to help fill in the hours?
