  • Incoming Warning Coming To All Houston Texas Based Kroger Stores

For those of you that work in the Houston Texas based area Kroger stores, if any haven't gotten a warning yet about the coupon policy change that is being implemented in all Houston area Kroger stores effective April 13th, 2011.

Kroger is stopping the doubling and tripling of coupons in their stores as well as coupon stacking (i.e. ecoupons that stacks with paper coupons). This announcement about the change is causing a huge reaction from couponers on the Facebook as well as across the board on coupon blogger/vblogger websites.

Already there's FB Groups popping up, getting people to form an organized protest in the policy change and letters have already been sent out to all of the Kroger chain stores in the entire Houston areas as well as the surrounding subdivision areas. The coupon bloggers and vbloggers is doing the same.

I just thought I warn you guys ahead of time that there's gonna be a major backlash of sucky customers screaming at the top of their lungs about the policy change when they discover it at the last minute before or after they read their receipts.

So what started all this? A TV program from The Learning Channel called "Extreme Couponing" is what's causing companies like Kroger to have a panic attack and implementing the policy change. Basically the change is a test pilot for their Houston based stores to see how well this policy works out and the reaction they'll be receiving from the customers. Personally I doubt this policy is gonna stick, not with the kind of reaction that the stores will be getting from the customers.

I don't have anything against couponing, I use them myself. But the show in of itself. It's making the rest of honest couponers look like crap and I hate that show. So does the rest of the honest couponers who are bitching on the blogs/vblogs and well as the coupon forums. They all agree the show is about the dumbest thing ever aired.

So be prepared guys, this ain't gonna end well......

Btw, the reason I am posting here is because, rightly so, that this new policy will generate alot of sucky customers. Plus to move this thread to "Check It Out", I've noticed doesn't garner enough attention as the attention from the Sucky Customers section does and I do want more peeps from the Houston area to be more aware of it and to warn their fellow employees. I don't think all employees at Kroger is gonna take notice on the notice boards in or near the break rooms.

So, I'm just warning you guys, there's gonna be alot of irate customers and I sure would hate to be in your shoes.

It's not a 'check it out' if it's about work. Definitely about work, so GWC.

We already don't allow eCoupons to combine with paper coupons. And if the mid-Atlantic division also drops doubled coupons... good. All of our big coupon shoppers are massive EWs who buy things that just barely don't qualify (like getting premium store brand, organic, or brand name instead of a store-brand item), then throw a fit and make you dig whatever it was out of the bottom of their bag so they can prove they bought it. Then when you show them it's not the same thing, they demand a manager to fix it.

Between that, $40 stacks of coupons on SCO (which has a hand scanner that frequently breaks down), and people scamming coupons, I have little sympathy for the big coupon shoppers.

We had triple coupons the other day. I could not believe the number of coupons we got. Our store is very small and usually has about $10 a day. We had over $200 that day. What a pain in the butt that was to count and stack and bundle.

I watched a few minutes of that show the other day and got mad and turned it off. What in the heck are people thinking? Who needs that many toothbrushes or shampoos?

They've already started some of that in Phoenix, but i'm not sure it was intentional. My last shopping trip it wouldn't let me stack eCoupons, but unless i missed it, there'd been no announcement of it, it just kicked in. Oh, and was flakey, only three eCoupons came up, but it claimed that they invalidated six coupons, for six different products??? I've no issue with that, heck, its what i'd expected, so i'd been pleasantly surprised that stacking was allowed, but i never went to much trouble to use it. Now the increased value and competitor coupons, those are two things that keep me coming to Fry's (Kroger), and will cause me to start looking at the competition... Except for Albertsons.

Well, what worries me is the elimination of doubles and triples is because I am caring for my bedridden wife (stroke victim) and I am no longer employed due to the fact of what's been happening with my wife. So we're riding on my wife's SSD alone. So I have to budget around that particular income. Not much choice on our part. Budgeting is very important for us and couponing is what really helps our budget.

So if Kroger does it, then all other stores follows suit. Then we're gonna hurt alot. We not only need food, but also to pay bills and medicine for my wife as well as expensive medical supplies to meet her special needs and they all aren't cheap.

I've seen the promos for that show. One of them had a woman bragging about how she came home with well over $600 in groceries. I don't know about the rest of you, but unless she had a pantry the size of a two-car garage, the average house doesn't have the room to store that much food. Plus, even if she did...wouldn't much of that crap actually spoil before it got eaten?

In response to the $600 groceries...it's not all that hard to accomplish.

First, you have to think of name brand crap. Usually that's pretty pricey with foods that aren't "great value" or the off brand. So that can add up quick. (in maryland, it costs 3.99 for a gallon of milk. I cry a lot lol)

On top of that, my parents have a large freezer thing they keep in a small closet room they have in the house. They don't have a pantry, so it's all cabnets, and they have a normal two door fridge. And i think with all that, we could get $600 in groceries.

Mind you, it's not something they do...but i think it's doable.

As for the whole spoil thing...if you buy mostly canned goods and freezer goods...and have a large family (of 5 or more, which we do) i don't think it will spoil all that fast.

i think the $600 lady has a large family...bc seriously...who would buy that much food if they don't NEED it just because they save money....

Oh wait...that's right...they are SC's..of course they will..bc practicality goes out the window...
I can only please one person a day, today isn't your day, and tomorrow doesn't look good either.

I'm sure Kroger will abandon this once the complaints start rolling in.

It's the same reason the swamp abandoned restocking fees for electronics (and as a result we once again had big-screen TVs being "rented" for the Super Bowl and then returned). God forbid the renters should take their business elsewhere.

Wow. I wonder if other stores are going to start following suit. My parents and I go to Harris Teeter when they do "super-doubles" (doubles coupons up to $1.98) and that's the only time we shop so if they start cutting that its going to seriously cut into lots of people's food budgets.

As for the $600 in groceries, its doable. Think of how much meat and milk cost on their own. And especially when you have a large family it adds up. We've got my parents, me, two teenage brothers, five dogs, and a cat. That's a lot of mouths to feed so couponing really helps, but the point is not to be an SC about it.

I have watched parts of a few episodes, and yes some do indeed have multiple rooms or their garage dedicated to food. I can see buying enough for, say a few months, but these people literally have years, like 3+ years, worth of food or other products. I recently purchased tooth paste, and it expired sometime in 2012. So in some cases they may very well have product that will expire years before they may ever need it. Great way to spend money.

Also, I have seen on the show where some people will show up with hundreds of coupons for something that is on sale and literally wipe out entire end caps or displays. Sure, 1 SC is happy, but hundreds of other shoppers are pissed because they are out of sale items.

So, any Kroger employees getting yelled at yet on account of the coupon changes?

On a side note, I'm hearing Kroger employees are now getting fired for using their Kroger card to help out the customers when they either forgot theirs or can't find it. One employee is being made to pay back $500 for helping a customer save money.

I've never been to a place that tripled coupons, but I thought everyone doubled them these days. Even the little place I worked at back in the 80's doubled them.

It is very easy to do $600 in groceries, for two people in my household plus a cat I can easily do $100 or more a week. And I don't even eat that much food nor do I get any name-brand stuff either.

But, seriously, I am glad that someone is beginning to stop the doubling/tripling of certain coupons. I realize that some people actually need things like that because of whatever situation they are in [large family, caring for a family member with little to no income, etc], BUT the stores are not doing this because of them. It's because of the people like on Extreme Couponing that these new policies are put in place.

I watched a couple of episodes of the show, I was disgusted to see how much stuff these people were taking when they have no use for it all because they have a coupon for it.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.
