  • Apparently, I'm Angry

I just received word from a friend that he was hired for a position with a national bank chain in customer service that I have been applying to for over a year now. He was rejected his first time interviewing over a month ago, and now they have hired him.

I helped him write his resume, I know his skill sets, I am more qualified and have a more stable work history than he has, and yet because one of our friends works there, he now has the job.

I am very angry right now, I'm mostly angry at the company. I don't want to be angry at my friend, but I am, which makes me angry at myself.

I can understand that feeling very well. I've had similar happen to me recently. For full details, see my threads in Morons in Management. The super short summary: I waited somewhere between 3.5 and 4 years for a specific job. When I was finally assuming the duties of the job, it got handed to someone else.

I understand the anger very well. It's not the people you're necessarily angry about, it's the way the whole situation played out.

And I'll just go ahead and say it here: The situation sucks ass. Through a straw. One that's broken.

I understand where you're coming from. A company was recently hiring students for a position I wanted, and the website said the position would be open from x day until y day. I applied closer to y day than x day. My friend applied on x day. Apparently the company decided they only wanted to interview 20 people so they interviewed the first 20 applicants and ignored the rest. She got an interview and a job; I got ignored. Never mind I have a far higher GPA and a work history.

I'm really angry at the company for being twatwaffles. I'm kind of mad at my friend. She's been a spoiled brat lately so that isn't helping me handle the jealousy very well.

Uhg I know the feeling. Well sort of.

I got a message from a company asking if I'd like to come in for an interview that week, called them back within the same day, left a message because no one picked up. waited a day, tried calling again, no answer. Left another message another day later, contacted my career advisor who knew the person who had called me. They never called me back. The next week I see a friend of mine from school got the job there.

Yeah, it's awesome when someone else gets a job you never even had the opportunity to interview for. I honestly wasn't pestering them either, I left 2 messages, one right after I got their message, and the other a day or two later. They just weren't professional enough to bother calling me back.

It wouldn't have bothered me so much if I had interviewed and she had gotten the job, she has a bit more education than I do, and I think a bit more experience, it's the fact that they never bothered to call me back about an interview they called me about in the first place!

        okay, rant done.

I know my workplace gets a stack of applications for every outside job posting, so HR has a few methods to quickly narrow the pile down to something reasonable. It's frustrating not to hear back, but HR only has so much time to go over all the applications, so the narrowing down process can be a bit arbitrary. Which means sometimes your app gets set aside for a silly reason, or it doesn't get looked at because it happens to be at the bottom of the stack and they ran out of interview slots before they got to you.

One of the things I know my bank does is credit checks. No credit doesn't hurt you, but bad credit gets the app put in the "look at later, if we haven't found someone else to meet our needs" pile. Might not have anything to do with how well you do your job, but it's a way to narrow down the apps.

          Does suck.
