  • Pyongyang Photographs

Dang. If you know anything about South Korea, this is in stark contrast. Read the comments below too(yes some are trolls and are annoying, but the others tend to be good)-- I agree that Pyongyang is a showcase town. Even then, there's still signs of ... wrongness. Where are all the people?
The photographs are all very well done-- and most come off as haunting and creepy. Even the more normal ones.

Daily life as you're allowed to see by the 'tour guide'...every one of those people is just posing in front of an empty set. Makes me sad.

And supposedly this city is in the running for I believe it's the Winter Olympics further down the track.

Maybe, just maybe, the whole "winter olympics" thing will actually crack the country open. *hopes*

They're in the running for the 2018 Olympics and they're one of the three final cities.

The other two are Annecy (France) and Munich (Germany).

For the Summer Olympics, Rome is the only city so far officially nominated by their National Olympic Committee for bids. (this is the 2020 Olympics btw). Other cities that are expressing interesting in running include Tokyo (despite the Tohoku earthquake, they're hoping that the Olympics will help with reconstruction efforts), Doha (in Qatar, they ran for the 2016 Olympics but failed), Dubai, Toronto and possibly Brisbane.

The pics seem so empty and unnatural.

Everything is so grey, it's quite depressing.

The most colorful picture was the golf caddy.

Also, I'm surprised they'd allow the big SPALDING to be photographed, especially since it is a USA company.

Nice catch on #11, Caveat (unless the ship is a hand-me-down).

So I've been reading the rather lengthy thread on Fark.com about this article and various people posted some interesting things if anyone wants to check 'em out. (I haven't watched the videos, yet, but there were several other comments about how good they were.)

Pictures of actual people doing actual things (just wish the text was in English...I think it's Russian?)

Thanks so much BE! Those are much better, even if they're still depressing. This is in marked contrast to South Korea! I mean... there are almost veritable rivers of people everywhere... and jeeze, that dude with the ox? At least the people look more 'real.' Less posed. More in situ, if you will.
I wonder if google translate would do anything... or I can try for someone who speaks Russian at MyUniversity. We do have a signifigant russian/russian-speaking chunk of people here in MyTown.
                    EDIT: google translate page

Cool! Thanks. Didn't think to try that.

That picture with the guy and the ox, I would have thought was black and white if the ox wasn't brown.

I doubt those clubs had ever been used to actually play golf prior to that picture . . . nor had those clothes been worn. They looked way too new.

I sometimes wonder if Kim Jong Il is actually proud of this lot; if he thinks these gray, bland, depressing cityscapes that all look like a before picture of Pruitt Igoe are really the best architecture money can buy. Do you get the feeling that if he visited Tokyo or Hong Kong, his head would explode like a watermelon?
