It's been hot all over. We've been getting near the 100 degree mark here in Kansas; we usually don't see temps that high until late July/early August.

I know, same here. a steady week of 100+ temps are not unusual for us, but this early in the year is a little odd.

Pretty dry, though, so on the upside it's not too terrible. I was outside most of the day in the worst of it. Humidity is not so high I can't breathe.

On the downside, my water bill is going to be brutal. I garden a lot.

we've had no appreciable rainfall since october. we're currently under water rationing (voluntary at the moment), and my hoa is threatening to fine me for actually following the 2-day-a-week watering schedule, which has caused my lawn to die in patches. they say i have until the end of the month to re-sod the lawn, otherwise they'll start fining me $25 per day.

the problem is, with temps the way they've been, and no end to the drought in sight, it's only a matter of weeks until we go into mandatory rationing, in which i can only water one day per week. so i'm about to be forced to drop a couple of hundred dollars to re-sod, which is then just going to die once stage 2 rationing starts.

i really hate this neighborhood.

How the hell are you supposed to keep a lawn green without water? That is outrageous. Spray paint it green, if that's so important.

If you all are under a water ration, and the peckerheads that sent you that letter have green lawns, maybe you should report them for watering. Is there a fine for watering a lawn during a ration?

I have mostly centipede grass, which I water very rarely. I watered it today because it looked like it was starting to go dormant in places. It doesn't look great, but it ain't dead. That kind of grass is pretty drought resistant and I think it would probably come back if it died down completely. That stuff is hard to kill.

there is once it goes to stage 2 (mandatory) restrictions, but in order for a citation to be issued the offender pretty much has to be caught in the act. most cheaters water in the middle of the night to avoid this.

fortunately, i don't sleep much, so you can bet your ass that after the harassment i've gotten at the hands of the hoa, once restrictions go mandatory (and they will; it happens almost every year) i'll be making middle of the night walks through the neighborhood and i will be reporting offenders.

the truly maddening thing is, there are large dead patches in what are supposed to be "community maintained" areas of the neighborhood. apparently the hoa isn't held to the same standard that they expect us residents to uphold.

this is my other beef. hoa restrictions say we can only plant st. augustine or bermuda grass, both of which are non-native water hogs. if i had it my way, i'd rip up the whole lawn and replace it with buffalo bluegrass, a native species that can survive with almost no water.

If they're going to make unreasonable demands like that, they need to let you use hearty grass.

Centipede grass looks fine in a lawn and it's very low maintenance once it's established. Mine "doesn't look great" not because it's centipede. It doesn't look great because I know very little about how to make a lawn look awesome and even if I did, I'd rather play with my flowers than mess with the grass.

I don't care if it rains as long as it's not 100 degrees.

My parents actually went to Washington DC this morning so I'm housesitting until Sunday and very happy for the air conditioning. I was considering doing some shopping tomorrow but I may very well wait until Friday. Use tomorrow for laundry and going through my stack of magazines that I brought with me, sort out my shopping list to restock my freezer (my fridge died last week and we had to toss the entire contents of the freezer and much of what was in the fridge), and not leave the house except to water the garden (which I should do tonight so it doesn't all evaporate before the plants can drink it but it's too dark back there).

Tacohuman, your HOA is definitely being unreasonable. Maybe you should ask them how you're supposed to keep non-native water-hogging grass green when rationing is going on.

It's been 100+ degrees (with minimum 60% humidity) for the last four days in Ottawa. UGH.

When I got up this morning at 8:30 it was 79 degrees with 76% humidity. By 10 it was 90 but the humidity had actually gone down to around 60%.

Now, at 12:40, it's 101 and 49% humidity.

Watered the plants in the back this morning before it got too hot; when the sun starts to go down I'm gonna water everything so they can soak it in overnight (though tomorrow's not supposed to be quite so hot).
