  • Greatest Father's Day Present EVER!

Called my stepfather yesterday to wish him a Happy Father's Day. And we started talking about my stepsister. For those who don't know, back in November she was found in her apartment unresponsive, and since then has been in the hospital and then a medical care facility in a catatonic semi-coma. Well, while talking to Stepdad, who will be 80 next month, he told me that the doctors had recently told him that it would take basically a miracle for Stepsister to recover any meaningful brain function. Without hesitation, I told Stepdad that I believe in miracles, and I have never given up hope.

A couple hours later, my mom called me. Now Mom has downplayed every development with Stepsister, as that is Mom's nature. Mom was giddy. Mom doesn't GET giddy. Why was Mom giddy?

    Stepsister SPOKE.

I'll let that sink in for a moment. While you're absorbing that, I'll go dance in the rain some more.

Yes, it takes meaningful brain activity to speak. And this was not just gibberish, either. She had already been laughing and crying at various things, but the doctors chalked that up to unconscious brain activity, nothing serious.

Then her husband asked her what year it was. She answered with the year of her birth.

Yeah, it was the wrong answer. But she understood the question, and answered with a significant year to her.

Then she correctly provided the names of her son and her father.

And then, without any prompting, when a nurse in the room sneezed, she blessed her.

My entire family, from Phoenix to England, is freaking out and coming out of our skins.

Half of Key West is ready to buy this woman a beer when she gets here. Which she WILL do. I've been saying from the beginning that at some point, she will come have beers with me in Key West, as she had planned to before this all happened.

To all the people who told me not to get my hopes up, a giant double FUCK YOU. I never gave up hope, never wavered in my belief that she would recover. To the doctors who told us it would take a miracle, here's your damn miracle, docs! To quote George Carlin, doctors don't know what they're talking about....it's all guesswork in white coats!

So needless to say I was out celebrating yesterday (it was a day off and I was already at the bar anyway), and things just got better and better. My friend, who was down in the dumps due to the death of Clarence Clemons (a friend of his) said this was what he needed. We agreed that Clarence was wailing away on the sax somewhere in honor of my sister.

At one point, at another bar, this guy saw me bouncing up and down in my shoes, and told me to calm down. I said, "NO!" And told him why. And he agreed, I absolutely should not calm down. We ended up having a shot, not just to celebrate my family's joy, but to celebrate his final cancer treatment this coming Wednesday. Final, as in no more cancer. EVERYBODY drinks! Woooooo!!!!

No one's allowed to be depressed, down in the dumps, or bummed today. Everyone get up and dance. EVERYONE!

"Do you believe in miracles? YES!!!!!!!"

Today's gonna be a fun one at work!

Thank you, Jester. I really needed that reminder today, to keep up my own belief in miracles.

        Go, stepsis!

                      I'll tell you something.

I believe in miracles. I also believe that we create miracles - for ourselves and for others. It's not easy to keep up the belief, but oh, is it worth it!

A lot of people (not necessarily in here) seem to think that suddenly my stepsister will be up and around in no time. Even I, the King of Hope, know that this will be a long journey, and there is still a good chance that there is some permanent brain damage. But as long as I draw breathe, I believe, and I hope. And that is something I won't let go of.

Today our parents went to see Miss Freak. (That's my stepsister. Figured I'd give her a name, and and that is close to one she might give herself, actually.) While she was not as talkative as yesterday, she was still talking. She knew her father's name, even though it wasn't clear if she knew that he was the one asking her the question. (Her vision right now is almost shot, as are her motor functions, though those may improve as well. More on that below.) Also, one thing Mom told me that I get the feeling she won't be telling my sisters: Mom was asking her, do you know who this is, do you know who this is? And she went through my sisters and I. When she asked, "Do you know who Jester is?" Miss Freak said simply, "Hi Jester!" I about cried when I heard that.

Mom cautioned me (and presumably Lil Sis, who lives in England) that this is still going to be a long process, and not to rush off and buy plane tickets just yet. As I was kind of planning on going home late summer anyway, it's no big deal for me. Not sure about Lil Sis, though of course we all want to zip off to Phoenix to talk to Miss Freak. (The Witch lives just a two hour plane ride away, so for her to visit is no biggie.)

And what we mean by a long process is pretty serious. There may very well still be extensive and permanent brain damage. At the moment she cannot really operate her limbs. She is for all intents and purposes blind right now. And while she is speaking, it is not so much conversational as responding to questions....though at one point, as I said in the OP, she did bless a nurse who sneezed, which got everyone in a tizzy, as that was not a prompted response like the answers to posed questions. But later this week, she is going to be re-evaluated by three different therapists, and we'll go from there.

She's not quite ready for Happy Hour yet. But I'm a patient guy. I can wait.

                            See ya soon, kid.

Yes it's going to be a long process, but she's definitely fighting to come back from where she was. So happy for her, and for all of you too *joins happy dance conga line*
