  • I am not "The Help"

A family of six came into the pub for lunch. One of them was very, VERY old. He was confined to a wheelchair and could barely move. If I had to estimate his age, it would be in the very late nineties, maybe even more than that. He was with who I assumed was his daughter, grand-daughter, grand-daughters husband and two great-grand-children, who were in their late teens.

They all ordered lunch. For the old dude, they ordered him a sausage sandwich. It all seemed to be fine. I took the meal out, and his daughter looked at it.

D: You're going to need to cut up his food for him.
Me: Oh, well, I'm a little busy at the minute, but I can get you a knife for you to cut it.
D: I'm not cutting it! It's not my job!

I had to walk away at that point, as I had to get the rest of their meals out. I got back to the table, and the family were simply sitting there, staring at the sandwich.

D: It needs to be cut! You need to cut it!

I handed her a spare knife.

Me: Like I said, I am a bit busy at the moment, but there is a knife for you to cut it.

I finished taking their food out and moved on to another table. The family were still sitting there, ignoring their meals and staring at me, while the daughter clicked and waved her fingers in an attempt to get my attention (I do not respond to anything like that, so I was deliberately ignoring them.) Unfortunately I had to pass their table to get to another.

D: Look, my father needs help eating! You need to cut his food and help him eat!
Me: Ma'am, I have already told you, I am too busy.
D: You are "the help" aren't you? Well you aren't doing a very good job of helping, are you?!
Me: I am NOT the help.

I walked away, seething and carried on. The family STILL hadn't started eating. They just stared at me and the sandwich. Again, I had to walk past their table. The daughter actually pulled on my shirt, which is an absolute no go. I pulled myself away quickly.

D: You don't need to be so dramatic! Are you going to do your job and help or not?
Me: I am only going to say this one more time. I am too busy. There are five of you at this table that are perfectly able to cut the sandwich.
D: But that's not our job.

I walked away again. I looked over and saw the grand-daughters husband cutting the sandwich, while the daughter glared at me.

Wow, the EW mentality of some people.

"No, madam, I am not 'the help.' I am your waiter, though I do confess some shortcomings in the completion of my duties, for you see, I can't wait for you to get the %*#& out of my restaurant."

And I don't know of any resturaunt where the waiters or waitresses will feed you. Not one that I could afford and certainly not one that children are allowed to eat at. For that matter the places I have in mind probably don't actually advertise either...

What the-? Are there places that do this? I mean if so, Id love to enlist one of the "help" to hold my daughter for me while I eat so I don't have to do so at breakneck speed with one hand while simultaneously trying to get her to eat. You handled that very well.

Pardon my French, but that's fucked up. Where did they think they were eating, a nursing home? I know that the one my late grandmother lived in...they'd gladly help her eat. Mainly, because she was 93, was very nice to the staff, and didn't have a fit most of the time. Even after her stroke, and she couldn't eat solid food and had to have everything thrown in a blender (), she was still nice to them.

Wow, they take the concept of 'waiting' to a whole new level. Bet they gave you a lousy tip too. Poor old dude, what a family he has, can't even help him eat.

There is one thing I want to add to this story that I completely forgot about.

Have any of you guys seen the movie Gran Torino? Remember Clint Eastwoods unbelieveably selfish and spoiled family? Well that is EXACTLY what these guys reminded me of. The teenagers especially.

I have had a restaurant cut my steak to me - I believe the cook did it. However, I was a regular, on good term with the wait staff, eating alone and had my arm in a sling. Oh - and she offered when she realized I was ordering something I usually didn't eat because I couldn't cut the meat myself.

The idea of demanding that your wait staff cut your relatives food while you just sit there with a sour look and a thumb up your - well, you know - that just amazes me. Although after all this time, it really shouldn't.

Next they would have wanted you to change his Depends and administer his medication.

And after that they would leave him when the pub opened and fetch him at after closing time. After all, "the help" can easily look after him.
