  • Sick kitty :(

Our baby, Pluto, is sick. I noticed him acting strange today. He was lethargic, not eating much, and hiding in the upstairs bedroom. He does sleep a lot during the day (as all cats tend to do) but he has about 3 spots he normally sleeps in and the upstairs bedroom isn't one of them. So it was really strange when I got up this morning, called and called and even jingled the bag of Greenies (cat treats that he loooves) and he wouldn't come. I found him curled up in the upstairs bedroom.

Later in the day he came down to use the litterbox. He was in and out of it 2 or 3 times in just a couple of minutes. Then he came and sat by me and I offered him a couple of Greenies. He ate 3 or 4 of them and then started grumbling and making "hurking" noises like he was going to throw up. He never actually threw up but he made those noises all afternoon, for like 3 hours. I called the vet who said it could be a number of things and encouraged us to bring him in, so we did.

Turns out he probably has a blockage in his bladder that's preventing him from urinating. I guess it's somewhat common in male cats. Apparently the minerals in the food they eat can crystallize and either solidify to form a blockage in the urethra, or cause swelling/inflammation in the urethra that prevents the cat from urinating. The vet is going to sedate him, run a catheter into his urethra to try and unblock the blockage, or at least let the bladder drain, give him some antibiotics, and keep him overnight. We're probably going to have to switch him to a prescription diet that will help prevent this from happening again.

We're all hoping that we caught this early enough that there isn't a bad infection in the bladder (from not being able to urinate) and that since Pluto is so young (just over a year old), with the new diet hopefully this won't become a recurring problem.

Both of my mom's boy cats have that problem. She just switched them to the special food that doesn't let them build up those crystals. It's a bit pricy for her, but it keeps her kitties healthy.

The only problem with it is that is smells better then the store brand food she feeds the other cats, so they all try to steal it.

The food is normally a concentrated type as well, so make sure you stick to the serving size on the side of the package, even if you have to get a set of scales. Sounds like overkill, but I used to see so many coming into the surgery that had stopped the urine problems only to end up with weight problems "because the biscuits are sooo tiny, you wouldn't think there was enough energy/nutrition in three-quarters of a cup of that food for the whole day!"

Hope he gets better soon and has no lasting ill effects!

My mom's one cat had this. Our vet recommended that we feed him Senior cat food every 4th or 5th can. If I'm right I think it was Friskes that had the low mineral content. The rest of the time he ate regular food.

Thanks for all the well wishes.

Our vets called us a couple times last night to update us. Pluto was doing well, they were able to sedate and catheter him without much trouble. There were a couple of small solidified crystals right at the tip of his urethra that they had to pop out, which were causing the blockage, and after they got those out, the catheter went in fine. Pluto's urine is a dark "straw" color, indicating that it's quite concentrated and there's a small amount of blood present, which could either be from a bacterial infection, or just from the crystals...they're going to send a urine culture off for testing to see if there's bacteria present, so they know better how to treat it. In the meantime, he was resting comfortably last night, they said he looked much more relaxed since they got the catheter in.

Waiting for the next call this morning, now. They're hoping to be able to take the catheter out this morning and then send him home tonight. Depending on how he's doing and how his urine tests today come back, they may keep him another day.

He does already eat canned food, half a can once a day. A friend of mine has a male kitty who's currently got a kidney stone, which can be caused by this same issue, and her vet switched them onto the same food that my vet is suggesting, and I guess it's working really well, so we'll probably try that.

I'm so glad you took him to the vet! Yes, this can be a life-threatening problem and must be treated ASAP. I'm glad he's getting better!

I was just reminded by my MiL that one of her cats died last year from a bladder stone. I'm so glad I work at home and am around the cats day in and day out so I was able to recognize right away when Pluto was acting strangely yesterday.

Got a couple more calls from the vet today. Pluto's urine was looking (and smelling) normal this morning. He behaved himself last night and both the catheter and the IV were still in place this morning. They pulled the catheter out at about 10:30 this morning and with a little "help" from the vet, Pluto was able to go without it. They're still waiting to see if he can go on his own, but the blockage is gone so they're pretty confident he'll be able to. They offered him some food, but he's very pre-occupied giving himself a bath (they said the catheter made kind of a mess on him) and licking at the IV, which is still in place, so he's too busy to eat right no. That sounds pretty typical of him, he is a very clean and well-groomed kitty.

My husband is going to pick him up a bit after 5 tonight. Hopefully once he's back home and in a familiar environment, he'll be more interested in eating and doing his business.

When McGriff had his first blockage, the vet recommended that we get one of those recirculating fountains to encourage him to drink more. It worked; some cats love them and some hate them though.

Glad to hear Pluto is doing better. I had a cat when I was a little girl who died from this: Tigger was the best cat ever

For some reason, I seem to get cats who love to drink water . . . they pee a lot too, which makes cleaning the little box a pain.

Having had kidney stones many times my self, Pluto has my deepest sympathies. Those suckers HURT.

Pluto is home! He's doing pretty good, very tired I think. He didn't eat much at the vet, we offered him some food when he got home but he wasn't interested. He did munch on the new dry food a little bit, which is good, hopefully it won't be hard to switch him over to it. We do already have one of the circulating fountains; one of our other cats has kidney failure, so we already do a lot of the tricks recommended by vets to get them to drink more water. Pluto didn't actually have a kidney stone or even a bladder stone, really, it was just a couple of little crystals that were blocking his urethra. Still painful, though, since he couldn't pass urine at all! But he's able to go normally now.
