  • Training received at work

This post is about the training I received at work & what has happened at work since that training.

Here is the setup at the university I work at as a contract Visitor Parking attendant...
The Visitor Parking garage behind the booth I sit in is under rennovation. There is a fence in front of that garage with a big sign stating the name of the construction company doing the rennovation. There is an opening for the construction company personnel, clients, & deliveries to enter. The fence is not closed during working hours. There is a sign posted at the Visitor parking booth for every visitor to check in with the attendant. The first level of the faculty/staff garage, which is to my right, is now being used for visitor parking. I was told that the construction should last a year to a year and a half.

A manager who works for the parking company I work for came by a couple of weeks ago to come up with a spiel to use when assisting the customers who drive up to the booth. Here are the main points of the spiel
    • to let the customer know that it is $5.00 to park, that it has to be paid inside the bldg., & to ask how the customer will be paying so the customer can be told where to pay at
    • to physically point to the garage the customer will be parking in, telling the customer that they will be parking in that garage, & waiting for the customer's acknowledgement
    • to tell the customer to turn to the left immediately & park on the first level only, exactly where to park, & to wait for the customers's acknowledgement

So I have been doing this ever since I was given that spiel

But...there have been times after the customer acknowledged that they "understood" what I told them, they drove straight into the Visitor parking garage that is under construction. So I made a change to the spiel, & I began saying "do not park in the garage that is in front of you", but yesterday a customer entered the visitor parking garage that is under construction after being told "do not park in the garage that is in front of you."

Then there are the customers who bypass the visitor parking booth I sit in and drive straight up to the entrance gate to the visitor parking/faculty/staff garage & press the call button on the call box at the entrance gate. So I walk up to that gate to assist the customer. I hear the customer speaking to the parking office employee who answered the call, & I hear that employee ask the customer "did you not see the sign that states the pull up to the visitor parking booth window & report to the attendant inside the booth?" The customer says no, they did not see the sign.

So this is what I am dealing with. I guess this is something I have to get used to. The client supervisor & the consruction company personnel do not want customers entering the garage that is under construction, but I do not know what else to do to convince customers not to do that.

You said the fence to old visitor parking is open during business hours. How much traffic does that side get? Maybe placing some easily-moved cones would be helpful. At least then there's a visible barrier to flag regular parkers.
