  • Well, crap.

I was on the freeway north of LA today, driving to my swordfighting class, when my car started to make a funny noise (the check engine light never came on, though.) Then I heard a pop and felt the car shudder: assuming I'd blown a tire, i pulled over and got out to check. All tires good. Hmmm... Pop the hood...

    Crap.

There's smoke rising from a part of the engine.

Call AAA. Get tow truck. No open repair places.

Rental car? only at the airport 20 miles away.

Metrolink? Last one ran 40 minutes ago.

The bus! I only have a credit card.

Tow truck driver drops my car off at repair shop with a night drop-off slot in the door, so I leave my name, phone number, and key. He drops me off at a nearby Denny's so I could be safe while trying to find a way home.

So...yeah. My car is stranded in LA, goodness knows what's wrong with it.

    Ugh.

*needs a hug. And several stuff drinks*

awww, sorry Joi! It's worse when you live in an area like SoCal where everything is far apart. Hugs.

Something similar happened to me a couple weekends ago with a friend's vehicle. There was an odd noise for a short time, then abruptly there was smoke pouring from the engine compartment. Turned out the idler pulley for the A/C belt had given up the ghost and the bearing seized up, stopping the pulley and causing the belt to drag. The friction rapidly started melting and burning the belt.

Luckily, we were less than half a mile away from his house, so we carefully and quickly drove back to the house, shut the car down, and let the belt cool off. Since the A/C was kaput anyway, and that belt didn't drive anything else, we simply cut the belt off (the belt was already wrecked and would've had to have been replaced regardless).

With any luck, it'll be something simple like that, Joi.

Update: the car is toast. Basically, something inside the engine completely blew, and they can't even find it without completely taking it apart and then they're not sure they could fix it.

Pros: I've needed a new car for a while. This one was 10 years old, had a busted door, broken A/C, etc. Also, my parents are not mad: they knew I needed a new car soon anyway.

Cons: I loved my car. It was a white Chevy Metro. I called it the Shuttle Tyderium. It has great bumper stickers on it. I don't have the money to get a car now. It might sink my plans to go to Florida to watch the next Mars Rover launch, which I've been planning for for 2.5 years.

I don't know how to buy a car, and all the advice people are giving me is stressing me out and making me feel sick to my stomach. Ugh.

I feel for you, Joi For a few years in the mid-1990s I had a car I inherited from my brother - a 1989 Dodge Daytona Turbo coupe. He'd bought it new and while it didn't have ALL the bells and whistles, it was still an awesome ride. At some point he decided he wanted an AWD so he could go "mudding" with his buddies and I ended up with the Daytona...boy, did he ever regret that decision I had the car for about 4 years...then all of a sudden just before my wedding it started overheating, and I got the sad news that it had blown a head gasket. I was not a happy camper at all.

I hope you are able to find a good car that you like and that you don't have to cancel your Florida trip. Wave to me when you're down here
