when I was a kid, my family watched a great documentary called "The Story of English." At one point in the show, they featured a clip of a professor singing Beowulf in Anglo-Saxon, and I was fascinated. For years after that, I tried to find some recording of that performance, or any performance of Beowulf in Anglo-Saxon. Finally, I found a glorious DVD of Benjamin Bagby, a medieval music expert, singing the first third of Beowulf in Anglo-Saxon. (See here, here, and here for bits of it)
I was enthralled by this performance, but was beginning to lose hope of ever seeing it live. Bagby performs mostly in Europe and the East Coast, only coming to the West Coast to perform at Berkeley once a year or so.
But this time when I checked his schedule...he's performing 45 minutes away from where I live! And it's FREE!! and I'm going to see him perform tomorrow!
Happy dance time!!!
