  • Beware of Scam

Just thought I'd post a little FYI.

I got an email the other day claiming to be from Paypal. It said I'd authorized a payment to Amazon.uk, gave some "order details" (which was rather weird & didn't make sense--said "NecklacKindle" & some other weird stuff)....and said I needed to click to confirm or cancel the transaction. Highly suspicious. I opened a new window and checked my Paypal account, and there was no such activity there. So it was definitely an attempt to get my Paypal account information.

Biggest red flag? AMAZON DOESN'T ACCEPT PAYPAL. Neither in the US or the UK.

So, if you get this email DO NOT CLICK where they want you to click and DO NOT give them your Paypal account information!

Hover over links before clicking them and at the bottom of your screen it should tell you the url for it.

Also, always check the message source if you can (this varies depending on what you use) It'll help show you what email the message came from.

If you use GMail please report it. Google does not take kindly to phishing schemes.

Hotmail, actually. They don't like phishing either. I can't find the report link (which I know I used once before but now I can't remember how...)....but they do have a "mark as" function, which includes "phishing scam." It deletes the message and blocks it from your email.

I get shit like that all the time in my Hotmail account. Thing is I make sure actual email addies from Amazon, Paypal, eBay, etc. go to my inbox. Sometimes I get convincing scams, but usually there's something off about them, like the company name has a capital letter that it normally would not have. Like I might get something from PayPal asking me to verify account information. Oh ho, but Paypal doesn't capitalize the second P in it's name, now does it?

I get them a lot for Facebook too. Also, usually the email address it's sent from is something like "info@nnkeefvgawrszhjfwl.com" - basically obviously not from the source it claims to be from.

And yes, I echo hovering over the links. Usually they go to a site with a bizarre name and not where you think they lead. Good times.

I don't know about reporting to Amazon, but for the Paypal end of things, you can also forward the phishing e-mail to spoof@paypal.com.

Actually.... (However, they won't ask for account verification in e-mail.)
