  • Dennis Ritchie Passed Away

I know the name will not mean much to many of you, and I apologize for that. This man was a developer on the very first version of the UNIX operating system. He co-invented the C programming language.

And he's passed away. I don't have good words to describe how I feel. In many ways, this man made my career possible. I never got to meet him, never got to thank him, and now he's gone.

It's a day to weep, and one that I'm sorry has come to pass.

Damn. It's a bad year for technological innovators.

    RIP.

I know the name well. I to wish I could have met the man. He DID make my career possible. I am from the Old School Unix, SVR3. I may still have a copy of that on 5.25.

      RIP.

        Great man...will be missed...

Hmmm...if his process has been kill -9 can he restarted?

        /etc/init.d/dennis_ritchie restart

it could work...but I wonder if he would then be a daemon process?

Yesterday, I found out about this. Today, someone explained just how vast, and how important, this man's legacy is. I think the post he wrote shares it far better than I can explain it.

And, for those of you out there who say "Who is this guy?" keep this in mind: The tools he wrote made Mac, and iPhone, and Android, and Linux, and Windows, and much of the way the internet looks today, possible.

No, I'm not exaggerating. Go, read this post about him.
