  • Steam Punk Costume help.

I was invited last minute to a steam punk masquerade ball.

This is what I have so far, and I plan to go look at masks Friday afternoon before the party, and if I can't find anything good, I do have a zorro type mask that I can use.

Does this look okay, or is there anything you would change. (I have little time and little money to add more to this costume, so I need to keep that in mind as well)

It's a little hard to tell with the size of the picture but it looks pretty good

I love masquerade masks, and have seen quite a bit. The ones I really liked they had at Target. They were fake leather, and if they weren't leather, they were very lightweight. The quality was nice, and the fanciest ones cost $20 at most. One I had my eye on looked aged, like a stone wall, but I digress.

Another option is to get a simple blank mask, and paint it yourself. Shouldn't be more than two dollars if you already have some black and brown acrylic. Make a pure black base on the bottom, and let it dry fully. Then just get a sponge or a dry brush and dust over small amounts of brown. Voila! Now it looks like a dirty, well-adventured leather mask!
My only regret is that I don't have a better word for "F@#k You".

Since the picture is so small it's kind of hard to tell, but the costume looks more renaissance than steampunk to me. Of course, there's a lot of overlap in the cultures. The mask will add a lot, if you can get one.

Hat, you need a hat. Hats are awesome.

            SQUUEEEEE, steampunk!!! *happy dance*

Sorry, I love steampunk, I've been adding more and more of it to my daily outfits.

You need more metal, if you can. Buckles and such. Do you have any belts you could add? Leather belts with lots of doo-dads are great. You can even wear them bandolier-style!

Hats: definitely find a felt hat if you can.

Goggles: goggles are a BIG steampunk thing. You can get a pair of cheap swim goggles and paint them so they look like they're made of metal (metallic fingernail polish works GREAT). Or, something my friend discovered: get two plastic cups from Starbucks (the flimsy kind, not the expensive reuseable ones). Cut off the bottom few inches, paint them gold. Take a band of fabric, cut two holes big enough for the cup bottoms, and stick the cup bottoms through them. Glue. Tie band of fabric around hat brim. Voila, cheap goggles!

Thanks for the help. I was able to find a nice blue sparkly masquerade mask, and some white gloves at the party store. Once I get a copy of the picture of both me and my fiance in our complete costume, I'll try to post it here.
