  • Sand! And fabric/costuming question.

    Sand!
Where can I find inexpensive white sand? I don't need much, just enough to fill a small jar. I also want it by Saturday.

    Sand bit is resolved! Thankies!

    Fabric!
I have a peasant-style skirt I bought a few years ago, which has become my go-to pirate costume skirt. I have sewn black lace to the bottom hem, and was thinking about adding more lace to the three tiny frilly bits on it. Ideas, suggestions, comments? Thanks!

Maybe a pet store for the white sand? It seems like a good start. Maybe Michaels or JoAnns?

I can't help you on the skirt issue.
    Random conversation:
Me: Okay..so I think I get why Zoro wears a bandana
    DDD: Cuz it's cool

So, by using the Doctor's reasoning, bow ties, fezzes and bandanas are cool.

As for sand, depends on what the soils like in your area. Where I am, if you wash some common soil, white sand will settle out. I can usually find clean white sand in the place where rainwater runoff washes during a storm.

Local dirt is red clay. And I'll look into pet stores for sand.

As a fantasy pirate, works for me

As a costumer on the other hand ... pirate floozy would be any poor woman of the late 1600s through early 1800s and wore pretty much what every other woman in the area wore.

This is a roughly middle class woman ca 1700.

If she were to fall on hard times <snicker> I could see the skirt being stained for about 6-8 inches up from the bottom, with perhaps small tears at the hem itself [but not raggedy if you see the difference] The wig would get bedraggled and the setting not as sharp. The powdering would have worn off, or she would have substituted flour for the fine chalk. The feathers would have been stained and bedraggled from exposure to rain, and the velvet cap would perhaps be also stained and perhaps slightly damaged from use. THe overgown [which is the same length as the undergown] would also suffer stains at the hem like the underskirt, the lace at the cuffs would be stained from accidental contact, and get floppy because the starch would get washed out by rain or water contact. There would perhaps be random staining and possibly small areas of wear. The whole outfit would suffer from overwearing because she probably would only own that one set of clothing. The shoes would lose their buckles [she would have sold them off as they would have some small value] and they would show wear.

This could be recreated using this gold and black baroque gown [looted and given to the doxy in question?] or this sack backed frenchy, or these 2 could be bargirl versions.
The advantage to the latter 2 is you can easily buy a commercial pattern to make them.

I'm doing more POTC-verse female pirate, so more Anne Bonney/ Mary Read type. I have some pants that work, and was thinking on making my skirt look petticoat-ish.
