So I did a defensive drivers course today. HEAPS of fun.
This particular course was aimed at Under 25's and was actually quite small. We also had PLENTY of space to practice in and our own cars, so we weren't practicing in some old or new car.
The slalom exercise was the best part. Aside from being rocked around like crazy, we got to watch the other cars do it as well (there were 12 of us total, but only 4 people were driving at a time). Several people knocked over the cones on the first run (45km/h), then when they did the fourth run (45km/h, after 2 35km/h runs), they knocked over none. I was one of the few people who actually DRAGGED a cone all the way down to the end.....and where it landed, it looked like one of the original cones all lined up.
We also practiced hairpin turns, sudden lane changes and emergency braking. It was quite scary watching some of the older cars tipping on their sides (not rolling over) . According to my instructor, the 4WD that was present that day should not have been allowed to do the lane change exercise since appareantly 3 other 4WDs had rolled over during that exercise
I do confess, I did cheat a bit during the sudden lane change and kept pre-empting the instructor. I managed to make the other passengers laugh though (we all sat in each other's cars during the runs, except for the ute, which could only carry 2 passengers, so the other participants in that group had to watch)
