  • A Samhain Wish (long...)

On this night I always look back, remembering those who are gone. My parents, my grandparents, most of my aunts and uncles, my brother. A couple of family friends. Plaidman. A lovely girl called Ana from another site I used to visit. Our little ones, the cats, dogs and birds who gave us unconditional companionship and love.

"When the dark night seems endless, please remember me."

Some of the losses happened many years ago, and I've somehow become accustomed to them. Others, not so much. Although it's been almost 3 and a half years since my brother passed away, in my heart it feels like yesterday.

"Now that the time has come, soon gone is the day
There upon some distant shore, you will hear me say:
Long as the day in the summertime, deep as the wine-dark sea,
I will keep your heart with mine, ‘til you come to me."

I know that others on this site have lost loved ones. Spouses, children, friends, family members (including pets). I honor you for your love, and respect you for your sorrow and your determination to go on. Never, never is it easy. There is no way around grief...that road only leads through the darkness, until you find the light again.

    “Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
    Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
    Safe in my arms
    You're only sleeping”

Sometimes I feel them with me again. My brother was present at a Samhain ritual my sisters & I did with a couple of friends one year. I felt him behind me, almost close enough to touch. My cats have come to me in dreams, and I can hold them once more. Memories and dreams are precious, wonderful gifts, more treasured than any material thing I own.

“Vine and grain, vine and grain; all that falls shall rise again. Hoof and horn, hoof and horn; all that dies shall be reborn.”

On this night outside of time, when the veil between the worlds is swept away, I wish that all of you will find at least one good memory to keep in your heart, and that the light of love, friendship, happiness…yes, and joy…will touch you again. Soon. Right now. Because everyone I’ve met here is so amazing, so much stronger and more worthwhile than you think you are, and I’m glad to be a part of this board.

“Life is eternal, and love is immortal; and the death is only a horizon. And a horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight.”

*The first 2 quotes are by Loreena McKennitt: the 3rd by Annie Lennox; the 4th is a pagan chant; and the last is by Rossiter Worthington Raymond.
When you start at zero, everything's progress.
