  • The Photograph - A story of love and loss

I just had to share this with you guys.

My grandfather passed away last week.

He was an amazing man and I am honored to have known him so well. He was a second father to me in so many ways.

So my wife and I are back here in my hometown and we decided to get some nice pictures made for the visitation and funeral.

Now my grandfather served in the navy during World War II and my grandmother has a small photo of him in his navy uniform from that time. It's the first photo he ever sent her of him.

My grandmother showed the photo to her mother (my great grandmother) and said "This is the man I'm going to marry".

They were together for 67 years, married for 62.

It's a great photo and my wife had the idea to take it to a photography place to have it scanned and a larger copy printed to display at the funeral home.

Well the photo lab somehow managed to lose the picture.

My grandmother was DEVASTATED. Having lost her husband last week, she had now lost a photograph which meant so much her and that she'd kept near and dear for nearly 70 years.

I went racing back to the lab and they looked everywhere for it but it was nowhere to be found. I requested and received several free reprints of the image to make up for the error. The reprints were nice, but they were no replacement for the original my grandmother treasured so much.

I prayed that somehow the picture would turn up again but was prepared for the worst. We knew that with each day that passed, the odds of recovering it went down.

The visitation was this afternoon and when we came home tonight there was a voicemail from the photo lab: They found the picture!

I have seldom seen a look of jubilation as I saw on my grandmother when she listened to that message. My wife immediately went back to the lab and retrieved it for her.

I said to her afterwards: "I wonder if grandpa pulled some strings up there to make sure you got it back."

It's been a very long few days and the actual funeral ceremony is tomorrow. My grandmother has been through a lot lately, but at least she got a lovely blessing by getting that picture back.

Here it is by the way:

I am sorry for your family's loss but what a beautiful story! I definitely think that your grandfather had a hand in the finding of that photo!

So am I. He really was one of a kind. Always pleasant and easy going. He and I never got into any kind of fight or heated argument. I don't remember ever being mad at him for anything.

I can't off hand think of anyone else in my life I can say that about.

What a sweet story. I'm so glad she got the photo back! I love those old photos. I have some of my grandparents and great-grandparents, they are wonderful.

So glad for you that you got that photo back. It would suck incredibly for something that precious to have been lost. (And yes, I really do think your Grandpa had something to do with it upstairs.)

Just wondering, though. Was that the whole photo, or was it trimmed/cropped? Because that's a really unusual aspect ratio for a full-frame photo from the 1940s. I can't think of any film format from that era that would have a 2:1 aspect ratio. Would you know, is that reproducing actual size on my screen, or does the browser resize it?

That's the whole photo. In reality it's about 2 inches by 4 inches, not quite wallet size but in that vicinity. It's definitely an unusual size for the time.
