  • Traditional Thanksgiving dinner

This is the first Thanksgiving in a long time that we have not gone somewhere, so it was up to me to make the traditional dinner.
This is what I came up with (for me, wifey, and kid):

Large broiler/fryer chicken (disguised as a small turkey. I am the only one who eats this kind of meat)
Mashed potatoes (butter and milk only added per the wife's request)
    Mac and cheese (kids request)
Stove top brand stuffing (out of the bird, wife's request)
Spartan stuffing with my additions (celery, onion, apple) stuffed in bird.
Chicken gravy (giblets, corn starch paste, drippings from bird)
    Cranberry sauce
Apple pie (home made from the tree out back)

Anyone have their own traditional foods?
Recipies for mine available on request
The gravy was quite nice this year.

It's just me, I managed to find 6 bucks...

      I'm having pizza rolls.

But if this was with Mom we would be having roasted chicken, corn bread stuffing, mashed potatoes, and a small can of cranberry sauce for me.

This was a small dinner this time. If the rest of the family would have been there, the list would have been a lot longer.

            I only had:

            Ham
            Sweet Potatoes
            Mashed Potatoes
            Baked Beans
            Roll
            Pumpkin Pie

We always have a "traditional" dinner at my grandparents and then I cook another traditional dinner for my hubby's family.

              Today we had:

Guinea fowl (instead of turkey or regular chicken) and it was awesome!
              Gma's dressing
              Mom's hashbrown casserole
              Mom's greenbean casserole
              Gma's corn, off the cob
              Gma's baked sweet potatoes
              my mashed potatoes
              my cole slaw
and my pumpkin pie dip/graham crackers
Gma's famously awesome homemade pumpkin pie
              Aunt's chocolate/rum cake

Saturday, I'll do most all of this myself......

                We had...

                A 16-lb roast turkey
                Homemade mashed potatoes
                Gravy
                Macaroni and cheese
                Salad
                Peas
                Candied sweet potatoes
                Cranberry sauce
                Crescent rolls
                Stuffing
                Homemade pumpkin pie
                Homemade apple crisp
Homemade gingerbread whose ingredients included homemade apple sauce and made-from-scratch molasses

Why is this a big deal? My mom cooked all of this, and my mother is blind. I was very proud of my mom today.

My mom's Thanksgiving always, ALWAYS included (and still includes...this was their exact menu today) the following:

                      Turkey
                      Gravy
                      Mashed Potatoes
                      Stuffing
                      Candied Sweet Potatoes
                      Buttered Corn
                      Applesauce
                      Fruit Salad
                      Rolls
Pies, usually Apple and Pumpkin and possibly others depending on how many people were coming

All 100% homemade except for the rolls. She would usually get those either from a bakery, or use frozen rolls (which are actually really good...I can't make homemade yeast rolls as well as the frozen kind I get.)

I do largely the same base meals with a few tweaks. This year, I made:

Chicken (since there were only 4 of us)
                      Gravy
                      Mashed Potatoes
                      Stuffing
                      Candied Sweet Potatoes
                      Cranberry Sauce
                      Rolls
Pecan Pie (my husband's favorite) and Pumpkin Cream Pie (a compromise -- he's not crazy about pumpkin so I tried something new.)

I leave out the corn since it's just an extra step and I don't think it's necessary. And I tried cranberry sauce for the first time this year, usually I make applesauce like my mom.

We never, ever do green bean casserole. I dunno why, it was just never on my mom's Thanksgiving menu so it never got onto mine. Plus, my husband hates green beans. And when I tried it once when we were visiting his family, I wasn't really crazy about it, either.

The hubs and I cooked for my parents and grandmother and my sister and her boyfriend and their kids.

                        We made:

Brined & roasted turkey with stuffing
                        mashed potatoes
                        gravy
2 kinds of mashed sweet potatoes (chipotle and cinnamon-sugar)
                        roasted Brussels sprouts with bacon
roasted heirloom carrots with butter and thyme
                        creamed corn
                        blueberry jello salad
                        homemade cranberry sauce
butternut and acorn squash soup with gruyere croutons
                        apple pie
                        pecan pie
                        sweet potato pie
                        bread pudding

my sister contributed green bean casserole and my mom made coleslaw.
                        Don't wanna; not gonna.

                          Wow. Freakin' WOW.

You can tell your mom that there is at least one home cook that is impressed and inspired by her. I mean, that would be hard enough to do by one's self WITH vision. Without it?

I repeat my earlier statement: WOW.

I had my mom, brother, and uncle up for Thanksgiving. They just left moments ago to make the 9 hour drive back home. So, there were 5 of us including my husband. I made:

19 lb turkey, fabricated, brined, seared, then roasted
                            mashed potatoes
gravy (drippings, stock made from the turkey frame after I fabricated it)
corn bread dressing (starting with corn that I ground into cornmeal)
sweet potatoes (the kind with pecans in it and marshmallows on top)
                            rolls from scratch
                            fresh cranberry sauce
                            roasted broccoli

pumpkin pie (from the fresh whole pumpkin)
                            fresh whipped cream
                            brownies

                            I am swimming in leftovers.

If anyone wants to get rid of their leftovers, I'd take them...

Mine wasn't...precisely traditional since it was in a takeout box from Perkin's, but it was turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans with bacon, and pumpkin pie.
