  • RIP Vaclav Havel

I'm sure most of you are now saying "who?"

Vaclav Havel was the first non-communist president of Czechoslovakia after decades of Soviet occupation and, despite his attempts to keep the country together, later was the president of the Czech Republic.

He was also a very strong anti-communist in the nation and was also one of the co-leaders of the Velvet Revolution.

He, and his followers, were able to change the entire government in their country with protests and political sway. Not one shot was fired and no one was killed (there were some injuries during the "revolution", though).

As an eyewitness to this little piece of history, the outpouring of good wishes is staggering. The statue of St. Wenceslas at the top of Prague's Wenceslas Square is surrounded by candles (Czechs light votive candles at graves), plus notes and flowers. More and more people are gathering around the statue to leave tributes. A huge line extends from the church where his body lies in state, and the people in the line hold flowers.

There's now a push to have Prague Airport named for him. It'll probably happen.
