    Living a whole five minutes away from the store, I get "OBTW you're staying late" ("late" never being longer than a regular shift, as I usually only work 4-hour shifts at a time). I usually don't mind, except yesterday...

    Scheduled until 2. At 1:45, SM informs me he needs me until 6. No big deal, except I should probably take my 30 minutes around now as I've been here since 9.

    No sooner does FEM tell me to take my break than SM tells the cashier I'm bagging for (J) to start training me on register (I've got the basics down pat, I just need to memorize the damn keypad and some extra help when complicated stuff like checks or WIC come up; unfortunately from the bagging end of the belt it's not possible to observe).

    The one thing I don't like about there not being a general "training" register or cashier number is that I have no idea how I'm doing in terms of IPM (which I take issue with, but that's another thread).

    Two customers in and I get a real winner. She practically throws a cantaloupe at me and barks "I don't want this!", questions every price (yes there is tax on laundry detergent, no the bagged heads of lettuce are NOT on sale, etc etc) and then at the end insists that I rang up the cantaloupe (no I did not). Then says that I rang up some of the next customer's shopping in her order...while there wasn't a divider, I know whose stuff is whose.

    FEM is motioning to me "take your break NOW". Asking to go on break is one thing, but when a manager commands me to take my break I plan to take it, the store could get in trouble if I don't. At that point my mom comes through the lane (glaring at the old man behind her who seemed to want her to pay for his steaks) and mentions that FEM told her to tell me to take my break pronto. Technically, I'm not supposed to ring up family members (even when training).

    I discreetly ask J, with the intent being that if she wants me to stick around, her telling FEM would be better (and I could get another cashier to at least get me a soda). "No you have a customer (laughs)". FEM is chomping at the bit at this point. Yes, I've only been on register for ten minutes, but FEM told me to go on break before the decision to start training (and J knew it).

    I get back from break and get a bit of ribbing from J "you don't want to train but you want to go on break?" during which FEM interjects and tells J that she knew the training procedures and should not have started training me until after my break (or waited until a non-slammed time).

    Geez...sucky customers AND sucky co-workers. Plus unexpected overtime (which is only nice for the money). Bleh.

      I think some SCs have a radar for cashiers-in-training, I really do (another grocery store has signs that go on the register "Please be patient, cashier in training" which I wish we had)

      I'm actually kinda hoping that I don't get put on register officially; I'm just not fast enough (or maybe too careful to make sure things don't back up on the rear belt and get crushed) on a permanent basis. Caution and IPM don't seem to mix well.

      Sure, I can now jump in if a cashier needs a pee break, but not sure whether I'm actually allowed to do that (as I'd be ringing under their number). My store is the only one that does not have a dedicated training cashier, and each cashier here likes to do things slightly differently. Aie.
