  • Congestive heart failure

So, I know I've posted a lot lately about my great grandmas. I've learned that my grandmother's mom, the one with the foot problems and the one that had Pierre (not the one with dementia) is not doing well right now from congestive heart failure. She's so swelled up all over that grandma had to buy her bigger slippers and she's on oxygen and struggling to breathe. I'm afraid I'm on the verge of losing one of both of my great grandmas. If you could keep them, and me, in your thoughts and prayers, I would appreciate it.

I know how lucky I am. I'm almost 30 and I still have 2 great grandmas. Doesn't make it easier, though.

Thank you all. I've never lost anyone I was remotely close to before. The thought scares me.

            It's hard, but get-through-able. (survivable?)

Coping With Grief is a small, but valuable book that has really helped me when I've lost people.

It helps you understand what you're likely to be feeling, and how to get support from people around you: and what sorts of support are likely to be helpful.

It also provides advice on how you can support your family (since they'll be feeling the same loss).
              Seshat's self-help guide:
              1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
              2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
              3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
              4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

Has your family discussed hospice? Among many other things, there is emotional/grief support for the family before and after the patient's death. I don't know if your great grandmother is at a point where hospice is even appropriate, but you might want to bring it up with her or your family or her doctors.

A bit of an update. I learned yesterday that she was actually able to sit in a wheelchair for the first time since this hit, so here's hoping she's getting better!

New update. This time, it's not good news. The fluid around her heart has gotten worse and she's developed pneumonia on top of it. She was rushed from the nursing home to the hospital via ambulance this morning because she was gasping for air. She's more stable now, but they're going to have to drain some fluid to take the pressure off of her heart and lungs.
