  • There is nothing wrong with it.

I am really tired of being asked why something is on sale and what's wrong with it, or why it's so cheap.

    Here's my universal answer:

    IT'S ON F***ING SALE

We have sales every week, there is a new flyer out every week, hell sometimes we have more than one.

When milk is on sale do you march up to the employees and demand to know what's wrong with it?

It's even worse when I got asked this during christmas and boxing week time, seriously, it's just on sale.

I had one guy refuse to believe that about a printer that was 50 down from 120, my response I turned around and showed him 4 other printers that were over half off as well. He ended up buying the printer anyways.

Also a second complaint, a lot of people call the store to ask a question about a product, and while they are talking to me they mention that either A. they looked it up online earlier or B. are looking at the website right now.

Well guess where my information is coming from?

I had a customer do that to me this morning. Lady, it's January, the time of year when probably 99.9999% of retail companies worldwide have sales.

I have some people that do that too, but the majority of them just complain that the sale price isn't cheap enough.

All stores have sales every week. I guess to the customer, that means we're just trying to pawn off damaged or other unwanted merchandise. Why can't they just be grateful they're buying an item at a discounted price and just shut up about it? I like buying things on sale, not complaining about them being on sale.

I get this once in a while, there's nothing wrong with our product. It's just that we're having a sale on X item, it's not expired nor is it damaged -- and, no, we're not trying anything funny.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

So I guess the big question really is....what *was* wrong with it?

I think the cheapness of the customers makes up for it.

Because if they did, they wouldn't have anything to complain about. You know they're so miserable they can't be satisfied unless they can find something to kvetch about until the person they're unloading on is as miserable as they are.

Believe it or not, I think I know the answer to this one.

They would rather come in when it's full price and DEMAND a discount. Bullying someone into giving them a deal is how they get their jollies. There's no satisfaction in buying something that's already marked down. After all, how many times do you see them trying to get a discount by saying "this one's damaged" even when the so-called "damage" is so miniscule that you need a microscope to see it? By their logic, if it's been marked down, it must be somehow less than perfect.

They just don't enjoy getting a good deal unless it was THEIR IDEA.

They weren't selling enough to make the suits happy.

I have heard that if it is not sold by a certain date in the new year, the company has to pay an inventory tax on the unsold product. They prefer discounting it to paying the tax on it.

Buh...wha?? I guess I've been living under a rock, I never have people asking me why something's on sale...the worst I get is "how come you didn't tell me about the Friday sale when I bought the stuff on the Tuesday sale?? It's a better price now!!" Fortunately I get to tell them we can price match (to our own prices only) within 30 days of the day they receive the item, and we can even take off one promotion and apply the other if the price will be better that way. They usually get all happy after that. I say, sorry, they don't tell me when the sales are gonna start (which is usually true, but of course even if they did I can't tell them...)
"I was only LOOKING, I didn't mean to enter my card's CVV and actually ORDER! REFUND ME RIGHT NOW!!"

From my time working retail, I know the main reason any given item is on sale is it's not selling at it's normal price. Even holiday items tend to be picked as either something to draw someone in (Which tends to be in short supply, cueing the 'bait and switch' calls), or something that hasn't been selling as well as others. I'll ask if a sales item has any bad reports or the like, but understand the salesperson most likely is going to both have limited information, and will be less likely to share 'bad' info with me, though, and I won't make a fuss about it.

I think you're on to something there. I've had someone brake check me and flip me off after I waved them in when they were merging.

It's sort of like "I was going to force you to give me a lower price. How DARE you give me permission without a fight!"

Let's face it. Some people suck.

Commodore Computers used to call on Friday afternoon to ask for a list of serial numbers for one of their products because the price was dropping $50-100 as-of Monday morning. And no we were not open on Saturdays if it was not near Christmas.
